Norway was represented by Britt Synnøve, with the song "Venners nærhet", at the 1989 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 6 May in Lausanne, Switzerland. "Venners nærhet" was chosen as the Norwegian entry at the Melodi Grand Prix on 11 March. Before Eurovision Melodi Grand Prix 1989 The final was held at the Forum in Stavanger, hosted by Øystein Bache. Nine songs took part in the televised final, of which three songs were selected for a "super final". The winner was decided by a five-way jury; an expert jury made up of professional musicians, a press jury, and three public juries split by age group. Other participants included 1987's Kate Gulbrandsen, three-time Norwegian representative and MGP regular Jahn Teigen and Tor Endresen, who would represent Norway in 1997. The evening had its controversies, as fan favorite Jahn Teigen failed to reach the super final, which was met by booing from the audience. Norway has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 60 times since making its debut in and has only been absent twice since then. In 1970, the country boycotted the contest over disagreements about the voting structure, and in 2002, they were relegated. Rolf Undsæt Løvland (born 19 April 1955) is a Norwegian composer, lyricist, arranger, and pianist. Together with Fionnuala Sherry, he formed the Celtic-Nordic group Secret Garden, in which he was the composer, producer, and keyboardist. He began composing at an early age (he formed a band at the age of nine) and grew up studying at the Kristiansand Music Conservatory, later receiving his master's degree from the Norwegian Institute of Music in Oslo. Rolf Graf (28 April 1960 in Oslo, Norway – 1 July 2013 in Oslo) was a Norwegian singer, bass guitarist, composer and record producer, and the younger brother of keyboardist Haakon Graf (b. 21 March 1955) and the jazz singer Randi Elisabeth Graf (b. 12 September 1966). Rune Rudberg (born 23 August 1961) is a Norwegian singer originating from Trøgstad in Østfold singing dansband music. He has a hectic live music career with more than 5000 concerts in Norway.
