Vasco Pratolini
Vasco Pratolini (19 October 1913 – 12 January 1991) was an Italian writer of the 20th century. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature three times. Biography Born in Florence, Pratolini worked at various jobs before entering the literary world thanks to his acquaintance with Elio Vittorini. In 1938 he founded, together with Alfonso Gatto, the magazine ''Campo di Marte''. His work is based on firm political principles and much of it is rooted in the ordinary life and sentiments of ordinary, modest working-class people in Florence. During World War II he fought with the Italian partisans against the German occupation. After the war he also worked in the cinema, collaborating as screenwriter to films such as Luchino Visconti's '' Rocco e i suoi fratelli '', Roberto Rossellini's ''Paisà'' and Nanni Loy's '' Le quattro giornate di Napoli''. Luigi Silori
Luigi Silori (19 November 1921 – 9 July 1983) was an Italian literary critic, novelist, playwright, and a popular radio and television personality in the 1950s and 1960s. Descended from an old Umbrian family, at the beginning of his university studies Silori was called to military service and spent four years in the Italian army during World War II. Silori served in the ill-fated Acqui Division, and was a survivor of the Cephalonia Massacre. After 1945, he graduated in Literature and started to write novels and theatrical texts. In 1954 he began appearing on both television and radio, and became very popular in Italy as "the man who introduced the books on TV". ''Le ragazze di San Frediano'' (English: ''The Girls of San Frediano'') is a 1949 novel by Italian author Vasco Pratolini. Plot The novel is set in Florence at the end of the Second World War. The story follows the escapades of a Florentine mechanic, a local " Don Giovanni," who romances several women simultaneously and secretly. His multiple relationships come to the women's attention, and they conceive a plot to punish the mechanic for his behavior. Film adaptations The novel has been adapted to film twice: *In 1954, a cinematic adaptation directed by Valerio Zurlini was released. The film represented Zurlini's directorial debut, and was one of the first movies to be filmed in Florence.
