Vargeão
Vargeão is a municipality located in the state of Santa Catarina in the south region of Brazil. It is located in the Immediate Geographic Region of Xanxerê and the Intermediate Geographic Region of Chapecó and at 298 miles away from the capital of Santa Catarina, Florianópolis. Its population, according to the demographic census of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, carried out in 2022, is 3 634 inhabitants. The town is located on the southern rim of an impact crater, the Vargeão Dome. Vargeão's city hall is located inside the crater. The local population is well aware of the impact origin of the structure, to the point that the town's official nickname is Meteor City (''Terra do Meteorro''). Its inhabitants are predominantly of Italian descent. A large floodplain (in portuguese: várzea) in the area gave rise to the name Vargeão (very large floodplain, in portuguese). Vargeão Dome
Vargeão Dome is a meteorite impact crater, crater in Santa Catarina (state), Santa Catarina State, Brazil, straddling the municipalities of Vargeão, Faxinal dos Guedes, and Passos Maia. The crater is an almost perfectly circular depression with steep walls, in diameter and up to deep, relative to its rim. It is of Early Cretaceous age, or about 123 ± 2 Ma. The meteorite impacted on the basaltic rocks of the Serra Geral Formation (Jurassic/Cretaceous). The crater displays several concentric rings and radial faults, and an eroded central bulge. The latter consists of impact breccias and sandstones from the Botucatu Formation, Botucatu/Pirambóia Formation (Cretaceous/Triassic), which have been displaced about above their mean depth in the surrounding area. Xanxerê () is a city in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. Italian and German are the mainstream cultures, having been brought by immigrants in the early 20th century through the migration of the "gauchos". The city is one of the main production centers of maize in Brazil and serves as an important industrial, commercial and service center for western Santa Catarina.
