Union Of Christian Evangelical Baptist Churches Of Moldova
The Union of Christian Evangelical Baptist Churches of Moldova is a national fellowship of Baptist Christians in Moldova. The first known Baptists in the region were nine people baptized by German Baptists in Turtinon in 1876. The first Russian congregation began in Chişinău, Kishinev in 1908. German Baptists formed an association in 1907 and Russian-speaking Baptists formed one in 1920. Under control of the USSR, Baptists and other Christians became restricted in their religious activities. The present Baptist Union was formed in 1991. The Union is a member of the European Baptist Federation and the Baptist World Alliance. In 1995 there were 225 churches with over 17,000 members. Baptists form a major branch of Protestantism distinguished by baptizing professing Christian believers only ( believer's baptism), and doing so by complete immersion. Moldova ( , ; ), officially the Republic of Moldova ( ro, Republica Moldova), is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. The European Baptist Federation (EBF) is a federation of 59 Baptist associations and is one of six regional fellowships in the Baptist World Alliance. The headquarters is in Amsterdam, Netherlands. History The EBF was founded in Ruschlikon, Switzerland, in 1949. The Baptist World Alliance (BWA) is the largest international Baptist organization with an estimated 51 million people in 2022 with 246 member bodies in 128 countries and territories. A voluntary association of Baptist churches, the BWA accounts for about half the Baptists in the world. It is the 8th largest Christian communion. The BWA was founded in 1905 in London during an international congress of Baptist churches. Its headquarters are in Falls Church, Washington metropolitan area, Virginia, United States. The Union of Christian Baptist Churches in Romania ( ro, Uniunea Bisericilor Creștin Baptiste din România) is a Baptist Christian denomination in Romania. It is affiliated with the Romanian Evangelical Alliance and the Baptist World Alliance. The headquarters is in Bucharest. History Origins The first modern-era Baptists in Romania were of German extraction. Karl Scharschmidt came to what is now southern Romania from Hungary in 1856 and settled in Bucharest. Scharschmidt, a carpenter by trade, had been baptized by Johann Gerhard Oncken in Hamburg in 1845. By 1863 enough converts had been made to form a church, and Oncken sent August Liebig to serve them as pastor. The Brotherhood of Independent Baptist Churches and Ministries of Ukraine was officially founded and registered in Ukraine in 1993. Structure The foundation of this new Baptist Union was organized and initiated by a group of churches, which for nearly thirty years had been active members of the Union of Churches movement. Among these churches-initiators there were churches of the Union of Baptist Churches in Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Khartsyzk, Kharkiv, Rivne, Zdolbuniv, etc. Today, the Brotherhood includes more than 100 communities and about 11,000 members.
