USS Stranger
The USS ''Stranger'' was a yacht built in 1880 by William Cramp & Sons and acquired in 1898 by the US Navy for use in the Spanish–American War. It was commissioned on June 30, 1898 and saw service in the West Indian Blocking Squadron off of Havana, Cuba. Placed out of commission from September 24 to December 6, 1898 at the Norfolk Naval Yard, she was overhauled and refitted for service with the Louisiana Naval Militia for use in training. She was officially turned over to the Militia on November 16, 1898. The ship served with the militia until the middle of October 1915, when she was sunk during a hurricane in New Orleans. William Cramp & Sons
William Cramp & Sons Shipbuilding Company (also known as William Cramp & Sons Ship & Engine Building Company) of Philadelphia was founded in 1830 by William Cramp, and was the preeminent U.S. iron shipbuilder of the late 19th century. Company history William Cramp was born in Kensington, Philadelphia in 1807. In 1855, his sons Charles Henry (born 1828) and William C., became partners with their father. In 1872, his other sons Samuel H., Jacob C. and Theodore were taken into the firm. The company was incorporated under the name "The William Cramp and Sons' Iron Shipbuilding and Engineering Company." The pilot boat ''Thomas Howard'' was built by the Cramp shipyard in 1870 for the Delaware Bay & River pilots. She was one of the Philadelphia port's fastest pilot boats. The New Orleans Hurricane of 1915 was an intense Category 4 hurricane that made landfall near Grand Isle, Louisiana, and the most intense tropical cyclone during the 1915 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm formed in late September when it moved westward and peaked in intensity of 145 mph (230 km/h) to weaken slightly by time of landfall on September 29 with recorded wind speeds of 126 mph (206 km/h) as a strong category 3 Hurricane. The hurricane killed 275 people and caused $13 million (1915 US dollars) in damage. George Leland Dyer
George Leland Dyer (August 26, 1849 in Calais, Maine – April 2, 1914 in Winter Park, Florida) was an American naval commander and the Governor of U.S. territory of Guam. In 1870, he graduated from the United States Naval Academy with honors and began his career in the United States Navy. During his career, he commanded the (1898), the (1898–1901), the (1902–1903), and the (1903–1904). From 1904–1905, he served as Governor of Guam.
