George Leland Dyer
George Leland Dyer (August 26, 1849 in Calais, Maine – April 2, 1914 in Winter Park, Florida) was an American naval commander and the Governor of U.S. territory of Guam. In 1870, he graduated from the United States Naval Academy with honors and began his career in the United States Navy. During his career, he commanded the (1898), the (1898–1901), the (1902–1903), and the (1903–1904). From 1904–1905, he served as Governor of Guam. In 1908, he was promoted to Commodore and retired that year. Dyer was the brother of inventor Leonard Dyer and father of composer Susan Hart Dyer. William Elbridge Sewell
William Elbridge Sewell (November 16, 1851 – March 17, 1904) was a United States Navy Lieutenant Commander and the 6th Naval Governor of Guam from February 9, 1903, until he returned to the mainland United States for medical treatment on January 11, 1904. He was born in Colchester, New York and appointed to the United States Naval Academy from that state in 1867. He served on numerous ships before becoming an ensign, and eventually became executive officer or commanding officer of a series of ships and installations. He then became commanding officer of the Guam flagship, and soon after, governor of Guam. As governor, he initiated a series of tax and legal reforms, including many that restored the rights of the native population to practice their culture more freely. He legalized and taxed alcohol and set up a court system that lasted 30 years. Leonard Dyer
Leonard H. Dyer (1897–1955) was an inventor, patent attorney, and yachtsman from Washington, DC. Inventions The most remarkable of his inventions was a patented six-stroke engine using water injected as a 5th stroke for extra power and cooling, to be ejected on the final (sixth) exhaust stroke. Though this patent does not have an extensive past, it came up in 2008 with regards to the Crower six stroke engine. Personal life Mr. Dyer was a member of somewhat high society, with a net worth of at least $500,000 in 1922. He owned the Yacht "Jack 'O Lantern," which was piloted to several victories by Abbot H. Brush. Despite his high ties, there was trouble at home. Luke McNamee (April 4, 1871 – December 30, 1952) was a United States Navy Admiral, businessman, and the 10th and 12th Naval Governor of Guam. He served in the Navy for 42 years, during which time he held multiple commands. During the Spanish–American War, he earned the Navy Cross, and later the Legion of Honour. Earlier on his career, he served as governor, and expanded funding for fighting the infectious diseases running through the native population. He represented the U.S. Navy as a delegate to the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. He later became Director of the Office of Naval Intelligence.
