USS R-5 (SS-82)
USS ''R-5'' (SS-82) was an ''R''-class coastal and harbor defense submarine of the United States Navy. Construction and commissioning ''R-5''′s keel was laid down on 16 October 1917 by the Fore River Shipbuilding Company, Quincy, Massachusetts. She was launched on 24 November 1918, sponsored by Miss Margaretta King, and commissioned on 15 April 1919. Service history 1919–1932 After completion at the Boston Navy Yard, ''R-5'' got underway on 28 April 1919 for New London, Connecticut, where she was assigned to Submarine Division 9 of the Atlantic Fleet. She headed south on 4 December for Norfolk, Virginia, and winter exercises with her division in the Gulf of Mexico from 21 January to 14 April 1920. The Territory of Hawaii or Hawaii Territory ( Hawaiian: ''Panalāʻau o Hawaiʻi'') was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from April 30, 1900, until August 21, 1959, when most of its territory, excluding Palmyra Island, was admitted to the United States as the 50th U.S. state, the State of Hawaii. Coco Solo
Coco Solo was a United States Navy submarine base and naval air station, active from 1918 to the 1960s. History The submarine base at Coco Solo was established May 6, 1918. The site corresponds with modern-day Cativá in Panama. It was on the Atlantic Ocean (northwest) side of the Panama Canal Zone, near Colón, Panama. Five C-class submarines were based there during 1914–1919. United States Senator John McCain was born in 1936 at a small Navy hospital, at Coco Solo Naval Air Station.
