Ushnas Prize
Ushnas Prize, also known as the Shri Ushnas Paritoshik (Gujarati: શ્રી ઉશનસ્ પારિતોષિક), is a literary award presented in Gujarat, India, by the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad (Gujarati Literary Council). The award is named after the Gujarati poet Ushnas. Gujarat
Gujarat (, ) is a state along the western coast of India. Its coastline of about is the longest in the country, most of which lies on the Kathiawar peninsula. Chandrakant Sheth
Chandrakant Sheth (born 3 February 1938) is a Gujarati poet, essayist, critic, translator and compiler from Gujarat, India. His pen names include Aryaputra, Nand Samavedi, Balchadra and Daksh Prajapati. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award for Gujarati in 1986 for his book ''Dhoolmani Paglio''. Biography Sheth was born on 3 February 1938 in Kalol, a village in Panchmahal district to Trikamlal. His family is native to Thasra village of Kheda. He matriculated in 1954, completed BA in 1958, and MA in 1961 from Gujarat University with Gujarati and Sanskrit as his core subjects. He completed his Ph.D. in 1979 from Gujarat Vidyapith with a research thesis on Umashankar Joshi. He served as a part-time lecturer at St. Xavier's College, Ahmedabad in 1961–62. Yogesh Joshi (Gujarati: યોગેશ જોશી) is a Gujarati language poet, short story writer, novelist, and editor from Gujarat, India. He is an editor of Parab, a publication of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad. His significant works include ''Avaajnu Ajavalu'' (1984; Collection of poems), ''Samudi'' (1984; Novel), ''Motiba'' (1998; Biography) and ''Adhakhuli Baari'' (2001; Collection of Short stories). He was awarded the Narmad Suvarna Chandrak award for his book ''Motiba''. Early life Joshi was born on 3 July 1955 in Mahesana, Gujarat to Bhanuprasad Joshi and Anilabahen Joshi. Udayan Thakker
Udayan Thakkar (Gujarati: ઉદયન ઠક્કર) is a Gujarati language poet, writer and translator from Mumbai, India. His first anthology of poems is ''Ekavan'' (1987) which won him Jayant Pathak Poetry Prize. ''Sellara'' (2003), his second anthology, was awarded the Ushnas Prize (2002–03). His other significant works include ''Jugalbandhi'' (1995) and ''Udayan Thakker Na Chuntela Kavyo'' (2012; Selected poems of Udayan Thakker). He contributed to Gujarati children's literature. Nalin Raval
Nalin Chandrakant Raval (17 March 1933 – 5 April 2021) was a Gujarati poet and short story writer from India. Born in Ahmedabad and educated in languages, he taught in colleges. He published five poetry collections along with short stories. He received several awards including Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak. Life Nalin Raval was born on 17 March 1933 at Ahmedabad. He was native of Wadhwan. He completed his primary education from Kalupur School No. 7 and secondary education from New Education High school. He completed his matriculation in 1954. He completed B.A. in Gujarati and English in 1956 and M. A. in 1959. In 1953, his first poem was published in ''Kumar'' magazine. He briefly taught in Bharuch and Nadiad before joining B. D. Manilal Mohandas Gandhi (28 October 1892 – 5 April 1956) was the second son of Mohandas Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi. Biography Manilal was born in Rajkot, British India, the second of four sons of Mohandas Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi. He had an older brother, Harilal, and two younger brothers, Ramdas and Devdas. Manilal's early years were spent in Rajkot, and it was in 1897 he traveled to South Africa for the first time (his father having moved there several years previously). Pravin Pandya (born 16 February 1957, Gujarati: પ્રવીણ પંડ્યા) is a Gujarati language poet, writer, playwright and dramatist from Gujarat, India. His significant works include '' Ajavasnan Matsya'' (1994), ''India Lodge'' (2003), ''Hathiraja Ane Bija Natako'' (2004) and ''Barda Na Dungar'' (2009). He is noted in Gujarati literature for his theatre activism and his dramatized adaptations of Hindi poet Shamser Bahadur Singh's works. Sitanshu Yashaschandra Mehta (born 19 August 1941), better known as Sitanshu Yashaschandra, is a Gujarati language poet, playwright, translator and academic from India. He was the President of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad. Bahuk
''Bahuk'' ( gu, બાહુક) is a Gujarati long narrative poem by Chinu Modi. The poem is composed both in metrical and non-metrical verse and centres on Nala, a character from the ''Mahabharata'' who metamorphosed into Bahuka. It is an acclaimed poem of Gujarati literature written in Sanskrit-styled figurative language. The poem was selected for the Ushnas Prize (1982–83) by the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad. Background and publication history Chinu Modi began writing ''Bahuk'' in 1971.
