United Congress (South Africa)
The United Congress is a South African political party formed by Mluleki George in December 2013. George left the Congress of the People (COPE), accusing its leader Mosiuoa Lekota of ruling the party improperly. The party formed 13 branches in Mbhashe, and registered to contest a number of by-elections in the area, held in January 2014. The party failed to win a seat, with a best of 6% in one ward, while in another ward the party failed to attract a single vote. Mluleki George
Mluleki Editor George (2 February 1948 – 5 January 2021) was a South African activist, politician and sports administrator. He served as a Deputy Minister of Defence from 2004 to 2008. Political career George joined the banned African National Congress (ANC) in 1972, and was arrested by the apartheid government, and sentenced to five years in prison in 1978, some of which he spent on Robben Island. On his release, he was a founder member of the United Democratic Front in 1983. He was elected as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa for the ANC in the first non-racial elections in 1994, and remained in the role until 2013. Originally elected as a member of the ANC, he along with a number of other Thabo Mbeki supporters, he joined the breakaway Congress of the People after the election of Jacob Zuma as party president in 2008. KwaZulu-Natal (, also referred to as KZN and known as "the garden province") is a province of South Africa that was created in 1994 when the Zulu bantustan of KwaZulu ("Place of the Zulu" in Zulu) and Natal Province were merged. The Western Cape is a province of South Africa, situated on the south-western coast of the country. North West is a province of South Africa. Its capital is Mahikeng. The province is located to the west of the major population centre of Gauteng and south of Botswana. History North West was incorporated after the end of Apartheid in 1994, and includes parts of the former Transvaal Province and Cape Province, as well as most of the former bantustan of Bophuthatswana. Mpumalanga () is a province of South Africa. The name means "East", or literally "The Place Where the Sun Rises" in the Swazi, Xhosa, Ndebele and Zulu languages. Mpumalanga lies in eastern South Africa, bordering Eswatini and Mozambique. It constitutes 6.5% of South Africa's land area. The Congress of the People (COPE) is a South African political party formed in 2008 by former members of the African National Congress (ANC). The party was founded by former ANC members Mosiuoa Lekota, Mbhazima Shilowa and Mluleki George to contest the 2009 general election. The party was announced following a national convention held in Sandton on 1 November 2008, and was founded at a congress held in Bloemfontein on 16 December 2008. The name echoes the 1955 Congress of the People at which the Freedom Charter was adopted by the ANC and other parties, a name strongly contested by the ANC in a legal move dismissed by the Pretoria High Court.
