Uduvil
Uduvil ( ta, உடுவில்) is an agricultural village of about 32.7 square kilometers situated along the KKS Road at about five miles to the North of Jaffna city, Sri Lanka. It is surrounded by the villages Chunnākam, Kandarōdai, Sanguvēli, Mānipāy, Suthumalai and Inuvil. KKS Road and Kaithady - Mānipāy Road intersect at Uduvil and the Junction is called 'Maruthanār Madam' Junction. The name 'Maruthanār Madam' came into use because of the public resting place (Madam) situated at the North - Western corner of the junction. The old building that still exists is not in use nowadays. Two main roads, the Kaithady - Mānipāy Road and the branching Dutch Road cut through the village. The fork point is called 'Uduvil Junction.' A cross road connects the Dutch Road and the Puttūr - Chankānai Road that passes through Chunnākam Junction. It is called Uduvil - Kandarōdai Road. Uduvil Girls' College
Uduvil Girls' College ( ta, உடுவில் மகளிர் கல்லூரி ''Uduvil Makalir Kallūri'', UGC) is a girls private school in Uduvil, Sri Lanka. Founded in 1820 by American missionaries, it is one of Sri Lanka's oldest schools. History In 1816 American missionaries founded the American Ceylon Mission in Jaffna. The ACM established missions in other parts of the Jaffna peninsula including one in Vaddukoddai. The ACM established numerous schools on the peninsula, the first school being the ''Common Free School'' (Union College) in Tellippalai. In 1820 the ''Uduvil Seminary'' was established in Uduvil. It was situated in an abandoned Franciscan mission built by the Portuguese. Harriet Winslow (1796–1823), a missionary turned it into an all-girls boarding school in 1824. Chunnakam
Chunnakam ( ta, சுன்னாகம், translit=Cuṉṉākam; si, චුන්නාකම්, translit=Chunnakam) is a town, located north of Jaffna. It is one of the important commercial centres in Jaffna. The original name of the town was Mayilani. In northern Sri Lanka, Chunnakam is only second to Jaffna in terms of population density and commercial activities in and around its neighbourhoods. Etymology According to Tamil scholars, Chunnakam derived from two Tamil words, "Chunnam+Gramam", "Chunnam" means limestone and "Gramam" means village, limestone is widely found in the nearby areas. Suthumalai
Suthumalai ( ta, சுதுமலை) is a village located in the northern Jaffna District of Sri Lanka. The village is divided into two Village officer division (Suthumalai North and Suthumalai South), and has a combined population of 3770 according to 2012 census. The village conaints many Hindu temples including the famous Suthumalai Amman Temple. Suthumalai is a historic turning point in Sri Lankan Tamil nationalism, where LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran had his speech on 4 August 1987, addressing over 100,000 people explaining the position of the LTTE. Manipay
Manipay or Maanippaai ( ta, மானிப்பாய்) is an affluent town in the northern Jaffna District of Sri Lanka. The original name of Manipay is Periyapulam. It was a mission location when the American Ceylon Mission (ACM) came to Sri Lanka in the 19th century. Dr. Samuel Fisk Green founded the Green Memorial Hospital in 1864 in this village. It was also known as ''Manipai''. There are number of schools in the village, some of which were founded by ACM. The 104-year-old Manipay Hindu College and the 53-year-old Manipay Hindu Ladies College, both High Schools, are prominent. The village also contains Hindu temples and churches. The Manipay Maruthady Pillaiyar Temple stands out. The Ramanathan Academy of Fine Arts is a school of fine art and a division of the University of Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka. History The Ramanathan Academy of Fine Arts (RAFA) was founded by S. Natesan, son-in-law of Sir P. Ramanathan. The academy was located at Maruthanarmadam near Chunnakam and its purpose was to promote the education of Tamil classical music and Bharata Natyam.
