Fotbal Club Universitatea Cluj (), commonly known as Universitatea Cluj or simply as U Cluj, is a Romanian professional association football, football club based in the city of Cluj-Napoca, Cluj County, that competes in the Liga I, the first tier of the Romanian football league system, Romanian league system. Founded in 1919 by doctor Iuliu Hațieganu, Universitatea Cluj has spent more than half of its history in the Liga I, top flight, but never became national champion. It played five Cupa României finals under four names, and won the trophy in the 1964–65 Cupa României, 1964–65 season after a 2–1 defeat of FC Argeș Pitești, Dinamo Pitești. Once considered the most important side in the region of Transylvania, its status has been threatened in the 21st century by the success of CFR Cluj, with whom it contests the Cluj derby. The Cluj derby ( ro, Derbiul Clujului) refers to football matches between CFR Cluj and Universitatea Cluj, the most popular clubs in the Romanian region of Transylvania. Background and history The Early derbies in the Antebellum Period The Cluj Derby began two decades before the two teams met in the format they are today. The regions known as Transylvania (including Crisana and Maramures) and Banat, on either side of the Mures river, were part of the Kingdom of Hungary within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The first match in the town of Cluj(then named Kolozsvar, because Transylvania was part of Austria-Hungary) was between Kolozsvar Athletic Club (KAC) which established a football section in 1904 and KKAS (the Kolozsvar Commercial Academy Students' Sporting Circle, founded in 1905). Iuliu Hațieganu University Of Medicine And Pharmacy
Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy ( ro, Universitatea de Medicină și Farmacie "Iuliu Hațieganu", or UMF Cluj) in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, is the oldest medical education institution in Transylvania, a continuation of the Faculty of Medicine which was founded in 1919, as a part of the Superior Dacia University. The university has over 6,000 national and international students, 2,400 resident physicians, as well as over 1,100 teachers and researchers. It was named in honor of the scientist Iuliu Hațieganu. The Paris Peace Treaties (french: Traités de Paris) were signed on 10 February 1947 following the end of World War II in 1945. The Paris Peace Conference lasted from 29 July until 15 October 1946. The victorious wartime Allied powers (principally the United Kingdom, Soviet Union, United States and France) negotiated the details of peace treaties with Italy, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Finland. Fotbal Club Rapid 1923, commonly known as Rapid București () or simply as Rapid, is a Romanian professional football club based in Bucharest, which competes in the Liga I. It was founded in 1923 by employees of the Grivița workshops as ''Asociația Culturală și Sportivă CFR'' ("CFR Cultural and Sports Association"). Domestically, Rapid București is one of the most successful clubs in the country, having won three national titles, 13 Cupa României and four Supercupa României. Internationally, its highest achievements are reaching the quarter-finals of the 1972–73 Cup Winners' Cup and of the 2005–06 UEFA Cup, and the final of the 1940 Mitropa Cup, the latter not being played because of the Second World War. 1941–42 Cupa României
The 1941–42 Cupa României was the ninth edition of Romania's most prestigious Association football, football Single-elimination tournament, cup competition. The title was won by FC Rapid București, Rapid București against FC Universitatea Cluj, Universitatea Cluj-Sibiu. Format The competition is an annual Single-elimination tournament, knockout tournament with pairings for each round drawn at random. There are no seeds for the draw. The draw also determines which teams will play at home. Each tie is played as a single leg. Second Vienna Award
The Second Vienna Award, also known as the Vienna Diktat, was the second of two territorial disputes that were arbitrated by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. On 30 August 1940, they assigned the territory of Northern Transylvania, including all of Maramureș and part of Crișana, from Romania to Hungary. Background After World War I, the multiethnic Kingdom of Hungary was divided by the 1920 Treaty of Trianon to form several new nation states, but Hungary noted that the new state borders did not follow ethnic boundaries. 1933–34 Cupa României
The 1933–34 Cupa României was the inaugural season of the Romania's most prestigious football (soccer) cup competition. In order to promote the competition and encourage clubs to register to the cup, no taxes were enforced on the participants. From the sixty-eight teams registered for the competition, fifty-two were not competing in the top-flight. The competition started in the autumn of 1933. The first phases involved only teams coming from district leagues. The draws were made taking in account logistic difficulties, and sixteen of these clubs advanced to the first round proper, where they were joined by the sixteen teams from Diviza A. The results of the preliminary phase were not recorded. The first winners were Ripensia Timișoara, who defeated Universitatea Cluj in the final.
