UMBC Retrievers baseball is the varsity intercollegiate team representing University of Maryland, Baltimore County in the sport of college baseball at the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The team is led by Liam Bowen, and plays its home games at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC on campus in Baltimore, Maryland. The America East Conference is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with NCAA Division I founded in 1979, whose members are located in the Northeastern United States. The conference has nine core members including eight public research universities, three of which, the University of Maine, the University of New Hampshire, and the University of Vermont, are the flagship universities of their states. The two non-flagship university centers of the State University of New York are in the conference: the University at Albany and Binghamton University. Liam Bowen
Liam Bowen is an American college baseball coach and former player, who is the current head baseball coach of the UMBC Retrievers. Playing career Bowen attended Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. Upon graduation, Bowen enrolled at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. Bowen pitched 4 seasons for the Scots. As a freshman in 2003, Bowen made 4 relief appearances pitching 3.1 innings and striking out 2 batters. In 2004 as a sophomore, Bowen took on the ace role of the team's pitching staff. He led the team with 3 wins with a team low 4.19 ERA. He also led the team with 49 strikeouts. As a junior in 2005, Bowen pitched a team-high 59 innings, 11 starts, 4 complete games and 43 strikeouts. In 2006, Bowen went 6–2 with a 5.18 ERA. The Baseball Factory Field At UMBC
The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC is a baseball field located on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in Catonsville, Maryland, United States. The field is home to the UMBC Retrievers baseball team of the NCAA Division I America East Conference. The field is located adjacent to UMBC Stadium. It has a capacity of 1,000 spectators. Previously known as Alumni Field, the venue was renamed on April 20, 2004, after the university's agreement with player development company Baseball Factory. Prior to the 2004 season, the field underwent a $350,000 renovation which added a new lighting system, playing surface, and warning track. The UMBC Retrievers are the athletic teams that represent the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, located in Catonsville, Maryland, in intercollegiate athletics as a member of the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), primarily competing in the America East Conference since the 2003–04 academic year. The Retrievers previously competed in the Northeast Conference (NEC) from 1998–99 to 2002–03; and in the Big South Conference from 1992–93 to 1997–98; while they also competed in the Mason–Dixon Conference at the NCAA Division II ranks: the first variation of it from 1972–73 to 1977–78; and the second variation from 1983–84 to 1987–88. College Baseball
College baseball is baseball that is played on the intercollegiate level at institutions of higher education. In comparison to football and basketball, college competition in the United States plays a smaller role in developing professional players, as baseball's professional minor leagues are more extensive, with a greater history of supplying players to MLB. Moving directly from high school to the professional level is more common in baseball than in football or basketball. However, if players do opt to enroll at a four-year college to play baseball, they must complete three years to regain professional eligibility, unless they reach age 21 before starting their third year of college. Players who enroll at junior colleges (i.e., two-year institutions) regain eligibility after one year at that level.
