Tom Snyder (animator)
Tom Snyder (born 1949) is an American animator, writer and producer known for the Squigglevision animation technique. His first success with this method was ''Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist'', starring Jonathan Katz. Snyder is a graduate of Swarthmore College, and as an educator he was inducted into the Association of Educational Publishers Hall of Fame. His educational work includes the series ''Science Court'' and educational computer software, such as FASTT Math. Since stepping down as chairman of "Tom Snyder Productions" he has worked on music composition and writing. In 2011, Snyder teamed up again with Jonathan Katz to create an animated web series, ''ExplosionBus.com'' In 2016, he released a new category of audiobook called an AudioMusical. His first AudioMusical is titled ''Is Anyone All Right?'' distributed by Audible.com. Squigglevision
Squigglevision is a method of computer animation in which the outlines of shapes are made to wiggle and undulate, emulating the effect of sketchily hand-drawn animation. Tom Snyder of Tom Snyder Productions invented the technique, which his animation studio Soup2Nuts subsequently used in ''Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist'', '' Dick and Paula Celebrity Special'', '' Home Movies'', ''O'Grady'', and '' Science Court''. Compared with traditional animation, Squigglevision is relatively fast and easy to produce. The non-stop motion of the "squiggling" outlines reduces the need for more complex animations in order to make a scene feel dynamic. Tom Snyder describes the result as "economy of motion". Jonathan Katz
Jonathan Paul Katz (born December 1, 1946) is an American actor and comedian best known for his starring role in the animated sitcom ''Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist'' as Dr. Katz. He also is known for voicing Erik Robbins in the UPN/Adult Swim series ''Home Movies''. He produces a podcast titled ''Hey, We're Back'' and can be heard on ''Explosion Bus''. Life Katz was born to a Jewish family, although he has said that he is not devout. His father, Sidney Roosevelt Katz, was a secretary-treasurer for the AFL-CIO, and his mother, Julia, died at a relatively young age. Katz has said that his father was not a particularly comedic man, but did tell a couple of jokes on occasion, which Katz has adapted into his comedy routine. ''Science Court'' (retitled ''Squigglevision'' in 1998) is an educational entertainment, animation/ non-traditional court show from Tom Snyder Productions, which was aired on ABC's Disney's One Saturday Morning block from 1997 to 2000. The cartoon was "filmed" in Squigglevision. Development ''Science Court'' utilized the limited-animation Squigglevision as its style of animation. In 1998, ''Science Court'' was renamed to ''Squigglevision'' in its second to third seasons. FASTT Math (acronym for ''Fluency and Automaticity through Systematic Teaching Technology'') is a mathematic educational software developed and released by Scholastic Corporation in 2005. Design The software comes in two variations one which is used by students and another used by teachers for managing and administering the program. The program gauges students understanding and fluency in math then provides linear instruction and assessments based on the student's skill. Soup2Nuts (sometimes referred to as Soup2Nuts Studios, and formerly part of Tom Snyder Productions) was an American animation studio founded by Tom Snyder. The studio is known for its animated comedy series, its use of Squigglevision, a technique of animation that reuses frames to make the animation look more kinetic, and for its style of improvisation in voice acting. History Tom Snyder, a teacher at Shady Hill School, began designing computer programs in the 1970s to enhance his 4th to 8th grade classes' learning environments.
