Theraps
''Theraps'' is a genus of cichlid fish found in moderately to fast-flowing rivers and streams on the Atlantic slope of southern Mexico and northern Central America. They are medium-sized cichlids. Species and taxonomy Historically, ''Theraps'' was included in ''Cichlasoma''. Once recognized as its own genus, it sometimes included a wide range of species now known to belong in other genera, including ''Cincelichthys'', '' Chortiheros'', ''Chuco'', ''Cryptoheros'', ''Kihnichthys'', '' Oscura'', ''Paraneetroplus'', ''Rheoheros'', ''Talamancaheros'', ''Tomocichla'' and ''Wajpamheros''. In a major review of 2015, only five species remained in this genus, but in 2016 it was shown that four of these were not close relatives of the ''Theraps'' type species, ''T. irregularis'', resulting in them being moved to ''Chuco'' and ''Wajpamheros''. As a consequence, Catalog of Fishes now recognizes ''Theraps'' as only including the type species ''T. irregularis'', but FishBase include both it and ...

Cribroheros
''Cribroheros'' is a genus of cichlid found in Middle America. These freshwater fish are distributed over most of Middle America, from western Panama to southern Mexico, on both Atlantic and Pacific slopes. Depending on species, their habitat ranges from fast-flowing rivers and streams, to slow-moving or standing water such as ponds and lakes. Although the genus is overall widespread, the individual species tend to have more restricted distributions and some are threatened, especially due to habitat loss and pollution. They reach up to in standard length. Species There are currently 8 recognized species in this genus: * '' Cribroheros alfari'' (Meek, 1907) (Pastel cichlid) * '' Cribroheros altifrons'' ( Kner, 1863) * '' Cribroheros bussingi'' ( Loiselle, 1997) * '' Cribroheros diquis'' ( W. A. Bussing, 1974) * '' Cribroheros longimanus'' ( Günther, 1867) (Red-breast cichlid) * '' Cribroheros rhytisma'' ( López S., 1983) * '' Cribroheros robertsoni'' (Regan The family nam ...

Paraneetroplus
''Paraneetroplus'' is a genus of cichlid fish native to moderately to fast-flowing waters in the Coatzacoalcos, Grijalva and Papaloapan river basins in southern Mexico. They reach up to in length. Taxonomy and species Historically, ''Paraneetroplus'' was included in the genus '' Cichlasoma'' (which is distantly related) and then in '' Theraps'' (which is relatively closely related). Once ''Paraneetroplus'' was recognized as its own genus, the members of '' Maskaheros'' and '' Vieja'' often were included within it. Today these are generally recognized as three separate but very closely related genera. There are three or four currently recognized species in the genus ''Paraneetroplus'': * ''Paraneetroplus bulleri'' Regan, 1905 (Sarabia cichlid) * ''Paraneetroplus gibbiceps'' (Steindachner, 1864) (Teapa cichlid) * ''Paraneetroplus nebuliferus'' ( Günther, 1860) (Papaloapan cichlid) * ''Paraneetroplus omonti'' Allgayer, 1988 – recognized by Catalog of Fishes, but not by Fi ...

Heroini
Heroini is a fish tribe from the Cichlasomatinae subfamily in the cichlid family. All cichlids native to the Greater Antilles, United States (southern Texas), Mexico and northern Central America are members of this tribe. It also includes most cichlid species in southern Central America (where only non-Heroini cichlids are '' Andinoacara'' and '' Geophagus'') and several species from South America (where several other tribes exist). A large percentage of its species were formerly placed in the genus '' Cichlasoma'' (itself now placed in the tribe Cichlasomatini), but have since been moved to other genera. In other classifications the tribe Heroini is placed in the subfamily Cichlinae. Abstract Genera This tribe include about 35 genus and 160 species: * ''Amatitlania'' Schmitter-Soto, 2007 * '' Amphilophus'' Agassiz, 1859 * ''Archocentrus'' Gill, 1877 * '' Astatheros'' Pellegrin, 1904 * '' Australoheros'' Říčan & Kullander, 2006 * '' Caquetaia'' Fowler, 1945 * '' Chiapa ...

''Tomocichla'' is a genus of cichlid fish native to moderately and fast-flowing rivers along the Atlantic slope of Central America, ranging from the Escondido drainage in Nicaragua to Bocas del Toro in Panama. ''Tomocichla'' was formerly included in '' Theraps'' (and even earlier in ''Cichlasoma'') and until 2015 '' Talamancaheros sieboldii'' was commonly included in ''Tomocichla''. ''Talamancaheros'' reaches up to in standard length. Species and taxonomy Before the genus ''Talamancaheros'' was recognized, these species had been placed in several other genera, including ''Cichlasoma'', '' Heros'', ''Theraps'', ''Tomocichla'' and others, but they are not particularly closely related to any of these. Cichlid Genera
Cichlids are fish from the family Cichlidae in the order Cichliformes. Cichlids were traditionally classed in a suborder, the Labroidei, along with the wrasses ( Labridae), in the order Perciformes, but molecular studies have contradicted this grouping. The closest living relative of cichlids is probably the convict blenny, and both families are classified in the 5th edition of ''Fishes of the World'' as the two families in the Cichliformes, part of the subseries Ovalentaria. This family is both large and diverse. At least 1,650 species have been scientifically described, making it one of the largest vertebrate families. New species are discovered annually, and many species remain undescribed. The actual number of species is therefore unknown, with estimates varying between 2,000 and 3,000. Many cichlids, particularly tilapia, are important food fishes, while others, such as the ''Cichla'' species, are valued game fish. The family also includes many popular freshwater aquar ...
