Paraneetroplus
''Paraneetroplus'' is a genus of cichlid fish native to moderately to fast-flowing waters in the Coatzacoalcos, Grijalva and Papaloapan river basins in southern Mexico. They reach up to in length. Taxonomy and species Historically, ''Paraneetroplus'' was included in the genus ''Cichlasoma'' (which is distantly related) and then in ''Theraps'' (which is relatively closely related). Once ''Paraneetroplus'' was recognized as its own genus, the members of ''Maskaheros'' and '' Vieja'' often were included within it. Today these are generally recognized as three separate but very closely related genera. There are three or four currently recognized species in the genus ''Paraneetroplus'': * '' Paraneetroplus bulleri'' Regan, 1905 (Sarabia cichlid) * '' Paraneetroplus gibbiceps'' ( Steindachner, 1864) (Teapa cichlid) * '' Paraneetroplus nebuliferus'' ( Günther, 1860) (Papaloapan cichlid) * '' Paraneetroplus omonti'' Allgayer, 1988 – recognized by Catalog of Fishes Catalog of Fish ...

Vieja
''Vieja'' is a genus of cichlid fish from Central America and Mexico. The majority of the species are freshwater fish found in stagnant or slow-moving waters of southern Mexico to El Salvador, but ''V. maculicauda'', which also occurs in brackish waters, ranges south to Panama. They are high-bodied cichlids that reach lengths of up to depending on the exact species. ''Vieja'' feed mostly on vegetable matter, but may also take small invertebrates. Taxonomy and species Historically, ''Vieja'' was included in ''Cichlasoma''. Once recognized as its own genus, it sometimes included most of the superficially similar, relatively large and high-bodied cichlids of Central America and southern Mexico, but several of these are now considered to belong to separate genera: '' Chuco'', ''Cincelichthys'', '' Isthmoheros'', '' Kihnichthys'', ''Maskaheros'' and '' Oscura'' (''Oscuro'' might still be better merged with ''Vieja'', but this remains unconfirmed). Conversely, ''Vieja'' has sometime ...

Maskaheros
''Maskaheros'' is a genus of cichlids fish found on Atlantic slope of southern Mexico and Guatemala in the Coatzacoalcos and Usumacinta River The Usumacinta River (; named after the howler monkey) is a river in southeastern Mexico and northwestern Guatemala. It is formed by the junction of the Pasión River, which arises in the Sierra de Santa Cruz (in Guatemala) and the Salinas ... drainages. They are relatively large, high-bodied cichlids and were formerly included in the genus '' Paraneetroplus'' or '' Vieja''. Species There are currently 2 recognized species in this genus: * '' Maskaheros argenteus'' ( Allgayer, 1991) (White cichlid) * '' Maskaheros regani'' ( R. R. Miller, 1974) (Almoloya cichlid) References Heroini Cichlid genera {{Cichlidae-stub ...

Theraps
''Theraps'' is a genus of cichlid fish found in moderately to fast-flowing rivers and streams on the Atlantic slope of southern Mexico and northern Central America. They are medium-sized cichlids. Species and taxonomy Historically, ''Theraps'' was included in ''Cichlasoma''. Once recognized as its own genus, it sometimes included a wide range of species now known to belong in other genera, including ''Cincelichthys'', '' Chortiheros'', ''Chuco'', ''Cryptoheros'', ''Kihnichthys'', '' Oscura'', ''Paraneetroplus'', ''Rheoheros'', ''Talamancaheros'', ''Tomocichla'' and ''Wajpamheros''. In a major review of 2015, only five species remained in this genus, but in 2016 it was shown that four of these were not close relatives of the ''Theraps'' type species, ''T. irregularis'', resulting in them being moved to ''Chuco'' and ''Wajpamheros''. As a consequence, Catalog of Fishes now recognizes ''Theraps'' as only including the type species ''T. irregularis'', but FishBase include both it and ...

Cichlid Genera
Cichlids are fish from the family Cichlidae in the order Cichliformes. Cichlids were traditionally classed in a suborder, the Labroidei, along with the wrasses ( Labridae), in the order Perciformes, but molecular studies have contradicted this grouping. The closest living relative of cichlids is probably the convict blenny, and both families are classified in the 5th edition of ''Fishes of the World'' as the two families in the Cichliformes, part of the subseries Ovalentaria. This family is both large and diverse. At least 1,650 species have been scientifically described, making it one of the largest vertebrate families. New species are discovered annually, and many species remain undescribed. The actual number of species is therefore unknown, with estimates varying between 2,000 and 3,000. Many cichlids, particularly tilapia, are important food fishes, while others, such as the ''Cichla'' species, are valued game fish. The family also includes many popular freshwater aquar ...

Cichlasoma
''Cichlasoma'' is a genus of freshwater fish in the cichlid family. The genus was previously very large (a wastebasket taxon), including cichlids from North America, including Central America, and South America. Reclassification and subsequent splitting of the genus by Sven O. Kullander and other ichthyologists has resulted in removing many of the former species from ''Cichlasoma'' to genera such as ''Amphilophus'', '' Archocentrus'', ''Herichthys'', '' Heros'', ''Nandopsis'', ''Parachromis'', '' Thorichthys'', ''Vieja'' and others in the tribe Heroini. Species According to FishBase, there are currently sixteen recognized species in this genus, but three very different Middle American taxa ("''C.''"'' geddesi'' a synonym of ''Herichthys deppii'', and "''C.''"'' istlanum'' and "''C.''"'' trimaculatum'' placed in ''Amphilophus'') are not included by Catalog of Fishes, effectively limiting ''Cichlasoma'' to a group of rather similar, medium-small cichlids of South America. * ''Cich ...

Genus
Genus ( plural genera ) is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of extant taxon, living and fossil organisms as well as Virus classification#ICTV classification, viruses. In the hierarchy of biological classification, genus comes above species and below family (taxonomy), family. In binomial nomenclature, the genus name forms the first part of the binomial species name for each species within the genus. :E.g. ''Panthera leo'' (lion) and ''Panthera onca'' (jaguar) are two species within the genus ''Panthera''. ''Panthera'' is a genus within the family Felidae. The composition of a genus is determined by taxonomy (biology), taxonomists. The standards for genus classification are not strictly codified, so different authorities often produce different classifications for genera. There are some general practices used, however, including the idea that a newly defined genus should fulfill these three criteria to be descriptively useful: # monophyly – all descendants ...
