The School Room
The School Room is a rock climbing training facility in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. The facility was originally built in 1993 by Gavin Ellis, Ben Tye and Andy Coish, as conditions at Peak District Limestone venues (at which they trained) were not always ideal. The facility was made famous by its reputation for its extremely difficult problems. Many notable international rock climbers were trained at The School Room, including Ben Moon, Malcolm Smith, Jerry Moffatt and Richard Simpson. The School Room received its name from the fact that its original location, in the Heeley Bank School community centre, formed a portion of an old school building. Another portion of the building was used for an art studio. The facility consisted of four plywood climbing walls, which are covered with wooden and plastic holds, at angles of between 15 and 52 degrees. Climbing Wall
A climbing wall is an artificially constructed wall with grips for hands and feet, usually used for indoor climbing, but sometimes located outdoors. Some are brick or wooden constructions, but on most modern walls, the material most often used is a thick multiplex board with holes drilled into it. Recently, manufactured steel and aluminum have also been used. The wall may have places to attach belay ropes, but may also be used to practice lead climbing or bouldering. Each hole contains a specially formed t-nut to allow modular climbing holds to be screwed onto the wall. With manufactured steel or aluminum walls, an engineered industrial fastener is used to secure climbing holds. South Yorkshire
South Yorkshire is a ceremonial and metropolitan county in the Yorkshire and Humber Region of England. Rock Climbing In The Peak District
Rock climbing is a popular activity in the Peak District; particularly on edges such as Stanage or Froggatt. Generally the climbing style is free climbing (as opposed to aid climbing) and the rock is either gritstone or limestone. Climbing has been practised in the Peak District since the late 19th century; James W. Puttrell is generally credited with starting the sport. The first climbing guidebook to the area was ''Some Gritstone Climbs'', by John Laycock, published in 1913. There are over 10,000 routes in the Peak District. One of the most famous Peak District climbers, and a pioneer of many new routes, is Ron Fawcett. Ben Moon (rock Climber)
Ben Moon (born 13 June 1966), is a rock climber from England. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Moon, along with climbing partner Jerry Moffatt moved forward the level of sport climbing, both in the UK and internationally. He was the first person to climb a consensus route at the grade of , by freeing '' Hubble''. Climbing career Moon's first officially declared routes had somewhat controversial names. The routes were both in France and had been previously attempted for a long time by local climbers. Malcolm Smith (climber)
Malcolm Smith (born 1973, Dunbar, Scotland) is a Scottish rock climber and climbing, competition climber who in 2002, won the bouldering IFSC Climbing World Cup. Smith is known for tough training regimes his bouldering; he is one of only a handful of climbers to have repeated Fred Nicole's boulder problem, ''Dreamtime'' at Cresciano, and has made first ascents of boulder problems up to , such as ''Monk Life'' in Northumberland, and ''Pilgrimage'' at Parisella's Cave in North Wales.
