Tennessee State Route 227
State Route 227 (SR 227) is a east–west state highway in extreme southern Middle Tennessee. It is the only state highway in Tennessee that both begins and ends at the Alabama state line, with one end at Cypress Inn and the other just across the state line from Lexington, Alabama. Route description SR 227 begins in Wayne County at the Alabama state line in the Cypress Inn community, where it continues south as Alabama State Route 157 (SR 157). SR 227 immediately makes a sharp right turn at an intersection with Big Cypress Road, which provides access to the Natchez Trace Parkway, before going east through a mix of farmland and wooded areas for several miles to the community of Fairview, where it has a short concurrency with SR 13. It then enters the Highland Rim and winds its way east through mountains to cross into Lawrence County. State Route 242 (SR 242) is a north-south state highway that lies mostly in Lawrence County, Tennessee. It connects Iron City with Henryville via Westpoint and Lawrenceburg. Route description SR 242 begins in Lawrence County in Iron City at an intersection with SR 227. It heads north as Wayland Springs Road to temporarily cross into Wayne County before returning to Lawrence County and leaving Iron City to wind its way northeast through mountains, running parallel to Shoal Creek. It then crosses over Factory Creek to pass through Westpoint before winding its way through some more mountains as West Point Road. The highway then enters farmland shortly before entering Lawrenceburg at an interchange with US 64/SR 15. Zip City is a small unincorporated community in Lauderdale County in the northern part of the U.S. state of Alabama, at the intersection of Alabama Highway 17 and County Road 8. Zip City falls within the U.S. Central Time Zone. It is part of the Florence - Muscle Shoals Metropolitan Statistical Area known as " The Shoals". History The first non-indigenous settlement was made at Zip City in 1817. Zip City received its unusual name from the fact drivers would "zip" through town heading towards the Tennessee state line, where they could buy alcohol. The name dates from the 1920s. Loretto, Tennessee
Loretto is a city in Lawrence County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,714 at the 2010 census, and 1,739 at the 2020 census. History Loretto began as a stagecoach station known as "Glen Rock" in the early 19th century. In 1870, a number of German Catholic immigrants settled in the Loretto area, and a new city was established shortly afterward. Some sources suggest the name "Loretto" was inspired by the Loreto region in Italy, while others say the city was named for a sainted nun. The congregation the immigrants formed, the Sacred Heart Church of Jesus, still exists, and their church (built in 1912) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Shoal Creek (Tennessee River Tributary)
Shoal Creek (originally called the Sycamore River) is a river from its east point or from the north point on the Little Shoal Creek north of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. The stream rises in northern Lawrence County, Tennessee, and enters the Tennessee River in Lauderdale County, Alabama, where its lower reaches are impounded in the backwater of Wilson Dam. Historically, Shoal Creek (Sycamore River) was an important source of water power for the cotton industry in Lawrence County. Among the early users of the stream's water power was David Crockett, who settled near the creek bank in 1817 and started a powder mill, grist mill and distillery. After these operations were destroyed by a flood in September 1821, Crockett left the area and moved to West Tennessee. Iron City is a census-designated place and former city in Lawrence and Wayne counties, Tennessee. The population was 167 at the 2010 census. Iron City was incorporated as a city from 1887 to 1901, and again from 1962 until 2010, its residents voting to disincorporate in the latter year.Larry Miller, Tennessee Place Names' (Indiana University Press, 2001), 107.
