State Route 242 (SR 242) is a north-south state highway that lies mostly in Lawrence County, Tennessee. It connects Iron City with Henryville via Westpoint and Lawrenceburg. Route description SR 242 begins in Lawrence County in Iron City at an intersection with SR 227. It heads north as Wayland Springs Road to temporarily cross into Wayne County before returning to Lawrence County and leaving Iron City to wind its way northeast through mountains, running parallel to Shoal Creek. It then crosses over Factory Creek to pass through Westpoint before winding its way through some more mountains as West Point Road. The highway then enters farmland shortly before entering Lawrenceburg at an interchange with US 64/SR 15. Iron City, Tennessee
Iron City is a census-designated place and former city in Lawrence and Wayne counties, Tennessee. The population was 167 at the 2010 census. Iron City was incorporated as a city from 1887 to 1901, and again from 1962 until 2010, its residents voting to disincorporate in the latter year.Larry Miller, Tennessee Place Names' (Indiana University Press, 2001), 107. The United States Census bureau treated the community as a Census-designated place for both the 2010 and 2020 census. It had a population of 328 in 2010 and 274 in 2020. Henryville is an unincorporated community in Lawrence County, Tennessee, United States. It lies along State Route 240 at its junction with State Route 242, southwest of Summertown, northwest of Lawrenceburg, and just south of the Buffalo River. The community was first settled around 1815, and was named after its first postmaster when a local post office was established in 1847. Lawrence County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 44,159. Its county seat and largest city is Lawrenceburg. State Route 227 (SR 227) is a east–west state highway in extreme southern Middle Tennessee. It is the only state highway in Tennessee that both begins and ends at the Alabama state line, with one end at Cypress Inn and the other just across the state line from Lexington, Alabama. Route description SR 227 begins in Wayne County at the Alabama state line in the Cypress Inn community, where it continues south as Alabama State Route 157 (SR 157). SR 227 immediately makes a sharp right turn at an intersection with Big Cypress Road, which provides access to the Natchez Trace Parkway, before going east through a mix of farmland and wooded areas for several miles to the community of Fairview, where it has a short concurrency with SR 13. Shoal Creek (Tennessee River Tributary)
Shoal Creek (originally called the Sycamore River) is a river from its east point or from the north point on the Little Shoal Creek north of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. The stream rises in northern Lawrence County, Tennessee, and enters the Tennessee River in Lauderdale County, Alabama, where its lower reaches are impounded in the backwater of Wilson Dam. Historically, Shoal Creek (Sycamore River) was an important source of water power for the cotton industry in Lawrence County. Among the early users of the stream's water power was David Crockett, who settled near the creek bank in 1817 and started a powder mill, grist mill and distillery. After these operations were destroyed by a flood in September 1821, Crockett left the area and moved to West Tennessee. State Route 15 (SR 15) is a west–east route from Memphis to Monteagle. For much of its route it has an unsigned concurrency with U.S. Route 64. SR 15 does travel through the southern part of all 3 Grand Divisions of the state: West Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, and East Tennessee. David Crockett State Park
David Crockett State Park is a state park in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. The park is located on Shoal Creek (originally called the Sycamore River) and commemorates the historical activities of famous frontiersman David Crockett in the local area. Crockett settled near the creek bank in 1817 and started a powder mill, grist mill and distillery using the creek's water power. By 1820, he owned of land at Shoal Creek. He also served as one of Lawrence County's first commissioners and justices of the peace. After his industrial operations were destroyed by a flood in September 1821, Crockett left the area and moved to West Tennessee. The park was established in 1959 on of land that includes the site where Crockett had his mills and distillery. Park facilities include reconstructions of a dam and mill.
