Twomey ( ga, Ó Tuama) is an Irish Gaelic clan based most prominently in what is today County Cork. The paternal ancestors of the clan are of the Corcu Loígde; the Twomey clan originated from Donnchadh na Tuaima who was himself a member of the O'Leary family. The Twomey family motto is "fortis undis et armis" which translates to 'strong waves and arms'. O'Leary
History Ancient The Uí Laoghaire clan, today associated with the Uibh Laoghaire parish in County Cork, is considered by scholars to have originated in the early Middle Ages on the south-west coast, in the area of Ros Ó gCairbre (Rosscarbery), of which the O'Leary were hereditary lords. The Annals of Innisfallen (Dublin copy) records St. Fachtna's (Saint Fachanan) death in 600 AD as occurring in "O'Laeghaire of Ross i.e. Corca Laidhe-I-Laeghaire Ruis". The clan traces its lineage to Lugaid Mac Con, an ancient King of Tara and High King of Ireland, and descendant of Dáire Doimthech. In the 12th century the O'Leary's were recognised hereditary wardens of St Fachtna's monastery and seat of higher learning, the School of Ross. David Twomey
David Twomey (born 21 February 1961) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A member of Collingwood's famous Twomey family, David is the grandson of Bill Twomey senior and nephew of 1953 premiership players Bill, Mick and Pat. He was recruited to Collingwood from Ivanhoe Amateurs and played his football mostly as a half back flanker. Despite appearing in the 1980 Preliminary Final win, Twomey was omitted from the Grand Final team for Ricky Barham. He did however get to play in the 1981 VFL Grand Final, performing well in a losing side. The 1981 season, was along with 1984, the only time he was able to put together regular appearances. Mick Twomey
Michael John Twomey (25 September 1931 – 14 December 2015) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). At 185cm (6'1") in height, Collingwood's Mick Twomey was taller than his brothers Bill and Pat. Recruited from Yarra Valley, he played most of his 157 VFL games between 1951 and 1961 as a ruckman. In fact he was short for a ruckman; but he had remarkable spring, and newspapers often carried photos of him seeming to soar over opponents. In the 1958 VFL Grand Final, for instance, thhighlights footagefrom Channel 7 shows him contesting ruck hit-outs and marks with opposing ruckmen who were 11 cm and 13 cm taller. Mathilda Twomey
Mathilda Twomey (née Butler-Payette) is a Seychellois lawyer and academic. She is the first female judge in the history of Seychelles and also the first woman to be appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Seychelles. Early life and education Twomey was born in Mahé, Seychelles. She holds a degree in French law from the University of Paris-Sud, France; and also a Bachelors of Arts degree in English and French Law which she obtained from the University of Kent, Canterbury, U.K. She was admitted as a Member of the Bar at Middle Temple, London and as an attorney-at-law in Seychelles in 1987. Liam Twomey (born 3 April 1967) is a medical doctor and former Irish Fine Gael politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Wexford constituency from 2002 to 2007 and 2011 to 2016. Kathleen G. "Kay" Twomey (April 27, 1914 in Boston, Massachusetts – September 26, 1995 in Wellesley, Massachusetts) was an American songwriter and music arranger. Twomey co-wrote '' Serenade of the Bells'', which reached the Billboard magazine Best Seller chart on November 7, 1947 and lasted 16 weeks on the chart, peaking at #3, and in a separate recording reached the Billboard's Best Seller chart on December 26, 1947 at #13. She also co-wrote ''Wooden Heart'', best known for its use in the 1960 Elvis Presley film ''G.I. Blues''. Joe Twomey
Joseph Twomey (born 1931) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a midfielder for the Cork senior team. Born in Blackpool, Cork, Twomey was introduced to hurling in his youth. He developed his skills at the North Monastery, however, his tenure at the school coincided with a fallow period in terms of success. Twomey came to prominence at underage levels with Glen Rovers before making his senior debut in 1950. He won six championship medals over a decade-long club career. Twomey made his debut on the inter-county scene when he first linked up with the Cork senior team for the 1952 championship. He went on to play a key role at midfield during a hugely successful era for Cork, and won two All-Ireland medals, two Munster medals and one National Hurling League medal. Jeremiah Matthew Twomey (15 August 1847 – 1 November 1921) was a Member of the New Zealand Legislative Council. He was widely known in New Zealand as a journalist. Early life Twomey was born in 1847 at Inchee Farm, County Kerry, Ireland. He worked at General Post Office in Cork from age 18 until he resigned for emigration to New Zealand in 1874. Before leaving Ireland, Twomey was an occasional contributor to the press and magazines.
