Margaret Twomey
Margaret Eileen Twomey (born 21 February 1963) is Ambassador of Australia to Italy (since July 2020). She is former High Commissioner of Australia to Fiji, from November 2014 to November 2017. Twomey has an honours degree in Arts (Russian and French) from the University of Melbourne. Her grandfather Patrick Joseph Twomey started the PJ Twomey Hospital for Lepers in Fiji. The Ambassador of Australia to Italy is an officer of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the head of the Embassy of the Commonwealth of Australia to the Republic of Italy in Rome. The position has the rank and status of an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and holds non-resident accreditation for Albania (1992–2004; since 3 July 2013), Libya (1978–1987; since 2002), and San Marino (since 1995). The embassy is co-located with the Canadian Embassy in Kyiv, but has been temporarily closed due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, with Australian officials currently based in eastern Poland and Romania.
