John Twomey (athlete)
John E. Twomey (born March 2, 1923) is an American track and field athlete, who competed in the 1951 Pan American Games. Life and career Twomey was born on March 2, 1923, and originated from Roseville, Illinois. He attended Roseville High School, where he managed the basketball team, before attending the University of Illinois, where he graduated in 1941. Twomey served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, from 1943 to 1945. He worked as a corn farmer, and was a member of the Illinois Athletic Club. Twomey tried out for the 1948 Summer Olympics, but fell just short of being selected. John Twomey is a manualism (hand music), manualist who appeared on NBC's ''The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson'' in 1972 and 1974. He is credited with bringing manualism to the public stage, as his performance of "Stars and Stripes Forever" was seen by millions of people and was included in the ''Best of Johnny Carson'' collection. Twomey also coined the term "manualism," as he introduced himself as a "manualist" in the show. Twomey was a regular guest of Johnny's after that first appearance all the way until Johnny retired from ''The Tonight Show''. John Twomey (hurler)
John Twomey ( ga, Seán Ó Túama; born 1962) is an Irish former hurler who played as a centre-back for the Dublin senior team. Born in Finglas, County Dublin, Twomey played both hurling and Gaelic football with his local club, Erins Isle. He won a Dublin Senior Hurling Championship medal with Isles in 1983 and a Dublin Senior Football Championship medal with them in 1993. Twomey began playing with the Dublin senior hurling team in 1982 and was a key part of Lar Foley's team of the early 1990s, captaining them in two consecutive finals in the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship in 1990 and 1991. John Twomey (sailor)
John Twomey (born 7 July 1955) is an Irish Paralympic athlete and sailor. He has represented Ireland at 11 consecutive Paralympic games winning medals at three of them. Personal life Born in Cork, Twomey was a local hurler and a competitive cyclist until he was injured in a cycling competition in March 1970 aged just 14. He broke his back and has used a wheelchair since. Athlete Twomey became a track and field athlete representing Ireland from 1976 to 1996 at the Paralympics in the discus event. He won both Gold and Bronze medals in Discus and the Silver medal in table tennis. When he retired from athletics the timing was right that he could take up his other sport of Sailing at Olympic level. In 1996 Sailing was a demonstration event at the Paralympics and in 2000 Twomey qualified to represent Ireland in the Sonar.
