Tuvalu At The 2006 Commonwealth Games
Tuvalu was represented at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne by a 5-member strong contingent comprising 4 sportspersons and 1 official. Tuvalu entered competitors in shooting, table tennis and weightlifting. 2006 marked Tuvalu's third participation in the Commonwealth Games. Medals and results Geoffrey Ludbrook competed in shooting, in the men's 50m rifle prone, and finished 32nd out of 38 competitors. Alan Puga Resture & Napetari Tioti took part in the men's doubles in table tennis, and failed to reach the round of sixteen. In the men's Team Event, Tuvalu's table tennis players finished 26th out of 27 teams. In weightlifting, Logona Esau finished twelfth out of fifteen in the men's 69 kg Combined. Tuvalu Association Of Sports And National Olympic Committee
The Tuvalu Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (TASNOC) is the Tuvaluan organization recognized as a National Olympic Committee (NOC) by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In 2006, Tuvalu satisfied the IOC's criterion of a minimum five national sports federations recognized by their international sports federations, which included basketball, volleyball, weightlifting, boxing and table tennis. TASNOC is a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code published by the World Anti-Doping Agency. History TASNOC came into existence when the ''Tuvalu Amateur Sport Association'' or ''Tuvalu Association of Sports'' (TAS) was recognized as the ''Tuvalu National Olympic Committee'' on 16 July 2007. Tuvalu ( or ; formerly known as the Ellice Islands) is an island country and microstate in the Polynesian subregion of Oceania in the Pacific Ocean. It was the fourth time Australia had hosted the Commonwealth Games. It was also the largest sporting event to be staged in Melbourne, eclipsing the 1956 Summer Olympics in terms of the number of teams competing, athletes competing, and events being held. The Commonwealth Games, often referred to as the Friendly Games or simply the Comm Games, are a quadrennial international multi-sport event among athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930, and, with the exception of 1942 and 1946 (cancelled due to World War II), have successively run every four years since. Flag Of Tuvalu
The current flag of Tuvalu was instated when the country became independent in 1978, after the separation from the Gilbert and Ellice Islands in 1976. Features Like many former and current British dependencies, the Tuvaluan flag is a blue ensign based on the Union Flag, which is shown in the canton of the flag; but has a sky blue field rather than the conventional blue. The previous flag ( with the Gilberts) was also based on the Union Flag but with the coat of arms created by Sir Arthur Grimble in 1932, the resident commissioner of the British colony.
