Turku–Toijala Railway
The Turku–Toijala railway ( fi, Turku–Toijala-rata, sv, Åbo–Toijala-banan) is a 1,524 mm (5 ft) railway in Finland. Running through the regions of Southwest Finland, Kanta-Häme and Pirkanmaa, it connects the junction stations of Turku and Toijala in the southwest–northeast direction. History Around the time of the completion of the Helsinki–Hämeenlinna railway – the first of its kind in Finland – planning its extensions towards the south to Turku and north to Tampere became relevant. The northern terminus of the former route was subject to debate; in time, the village of Toijala was chosen as a compromise. The two branches were inaugurated at the same time, on 22 June 1876. Aurajoki
The Aura River (Finnish ''Aurajoki''; Swedish ''Aura å'') is a river in south-western Finland. Its sources are in Oripää, and it flows through Pöytyä, Aura and Lieto before discharging into the Archipelago Sea in the middle of the city of Turku. The waters of the Aura river are brown. The total length of the river is about , and it contains eleven rapids, the biggest of which is Nautelankoski at Lieto. The reserve tap water for Turku Region is drawn from the Aura, the city's secondary waterworks being situated by the Halinen rapids. The word "Aura" appears to come from an archaic Swedish word for waterway (''aathra'', which is still current in the form ''ådra''), but in Finnish it translates as "plough," a name the river lives up to. Situated in an agricultural zone, it is made turbid by surface runoff from nearby farms with eutrophication as the biggest threat. Hämeenlinna Railway Station
Hämeenlinna railway station ( fi, Hämeenlinnan rautatieasema, sv, Tavastehus järnvägsstation) is located in the town of Hämeenlinna, Finland. Hämeenlinna belongs to the oldest railway stations in Finland, because the first railway line in Finland was opened between Helsinki and Hämeenlinna in 1862. The original station building, designed by the architect Carl Albert Edelfelt, was destroyed during the Finnish Civil War in 1918. The current red brick station building was designed by Thure Hellström and completed in 1921. Hämeenlinna is located about halfway between Helsinki and Tampere, and because of this, the station has much pass-through traffic, even though the Hämeenlinna station is not a crossing-point station. All trains between Helsinki and Tampere, except Pendolino trains, stop at Hämeenlinna. The Hämeenlinna station also has an underpass tunnel. The station building has a restaurant. Humppila Railway Station
Humppila railway station (Finnish ''Humppilan rautatieasema''; Swedish ''Humppila järnvägsstation'') is located in the municipality of Humppila in the region of Tavastia Proper in Finland. The original station building on the track between Turku and Toijala was destroyed in a fire in 1973 after a failed attempt to rob a post office. Apparently the robbers were scared of something, and when they ran away, the accidentally left their welding flame on. Humppila was without a proper station building for nearly a decade, because the new building designed by Mauri Liedenpohja was only completed in 1983. Before this, traffic control was handled from a cargo warehouse. The station is nowadays unmanned. The traffic control is handled remotely from the Tampere railway station. Ticket sales were discontinued in March 2000. Passenger trains between Turku and Tampere still stop at the station. Loimaa Railway Station
Loimaa railway station (Finnish ''Loimaan asema''; Swedish ''Loimaa station'') is located in the town of Loimaa, Finland. The station is located almost exactly halfway between the Turku Central and Toijala railway stations, making it an important place along the track. The station was taken into use when the track was completed in 1876. The station building was probably designed by Knut Nylander, who was the building designer of the VR Group at that time. The plans for the station haven't been signed, however. The station is located in the central area of the town of Loimaa, at the crossing point of the railroad, Finnish National Road 9 and Finnish local road 213. All passenger trains stop at Loimaa, and it also serves cargo traffic. VR Class Sm3
The Sm3 ''Pendolino'' (originally branded as Pendolino S220, and usually referred to simply as the Pendolino) is a class of high-speed body-tilting trains operated by VR Group. It is a member of the Pendolino train family; its design is based on the ETR 460. The first two trainsets were assembled in Finland by Rautaruukki- Transtech in the mid-1990s. The rest of the series of eighteen EMUs were built by Fiat Ferroviaria (later Alstom) between 2000 and 2006. The trains serve most of Finland's major cities such as Helsinki, Turku, Oulu and Joensuu with a maximum speed of , although this speed is only attained between Kerava and Lahti. The train has a power output of and weighs . The Sm3 had a long prototype phase before the main series was ordered, with reliability issues being brought up by the press from time to time. InterCity (commonly abbreviated ''IC'' on timetables and tickets) is the classification applied to certain long-distance passenger train services in Europe. Such trains (in contrast to regional, local, or commuter trains) generally call at major stations only. Toijala
Toijala is a former town and municipality of Finland, located some south of Tampere. On 1 January 2007, it was consolidated with Viiala to form the town of Akaa. Toijala is known as an important railway crossroads. The Helsinki–Tampere and Turku–Tampere tracks meet at Toijala railway station. Toijala is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Pirkanmaa region. The municipality had a population of 8,305 (end of April 2004) and covered an area of of which is water.
