Tuomo Suomalainen
Tuomo Oskari Suomalainen (born 29 November 1931 in Gogland, Finland died 1 November 1988) was a Finnish architect. He worked very closely with his brother Timo Suomalainen who also was an architect. Most of the works they designed jointly. Their most well known work is Temppeliaukio Church in Helsinki, which has become one of the most visited sites in Finland. Tuomo Suomalainen's last work was the chapel at Kellonummi cemetery in Espoo, this too, together with his brother. The chapel was inaugurated in 1993. Gogland
Gogland or Hogland (russian: Гогланд, transliteration from original sv, Hogland; fi, Suursaari) is an island in the Gulf of Finland in the eastern Baltic Sea, about 180 km west from Saint Petersburg and 35 km from the coast of Finland (near Kotka). Hogland has an area of approximately ; its highest point is . It belongs to Russia's Kingiseppsky District in the Leningrad Oblast. Gogland's tourist industry is growing in importance, with most tourists coming from St. Petersburg, and some from Finland. In 2006, however, Russian authorities declared Gogland a "border area", which means that foreign nationals are not allowed to travel to the island without special permits. Espoonlahti Church
Espoonlahti Church ( fi, Espoonlahden kirkko, sv, Esbovikens kyrka) is a Lutheran church situated in Espoonlahti, Espoo, Finland. It was designed by architects Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, architects of the Rock Church ( Temppeliaukion kirkko), who were also members of the Espoonlahti congregation. The groundstone for the church was set in August 1979 and the building was completed in 1980. The organs were built and assembled in 1983.Back 2005, p. 7. As the number of members in the congregation grew rapidly, additional rooms were soon needed. This new phase of building was completed in 1987, also by the architects Suomalainen. The shape of floor in the church hall is a polygon, and positioned so that during church service the Sun lights up the altar wall. The church hall itself seats 410 but when it is opened to the adjoining congregational hall, 710 can be seated.
