Tukkilaiskisat (Tukkilaiset) is a traditional timber rafting competition in Finland. Originally ''tukkilaiset'' referred to log drivers. Recent sites where Tukkilaiskisat took place are Ii (Raasakkakoski), Kuusamo (Käylä), Laukaa (Kuusaankoski), Ylitornio (Kattilakoski), Imatra (Tainionkoski), and Lieksa. ''A Summer by the River'' ( fi, Kuningasjätkä) is a 1998 Finnish film written and directed by Markku Pölönen. The film is set in the 1950s Eastern Finland and tells the story of father Tenho ( Pertti Koivula) and son Topi ( Simo Kontio) after Tenho's wife — Topi's mother — dies and leaves the two men unable to pay rent. The two men move out of the family home and spend the summer working as lumberjacks in log driving, sleeping on the river bank and growing closer together through the experience. The film was a major success at the 1999 Jussi Awards winning in five categories including Best Film, Best Actor and Best Direction. Hanna Snellman
Hanna Kyllikki Snellmann (born 16 April 1961) is Professor of Ethnology and Vice-rector at the University of Helsinki. The focus of her research is on migration within and from the Arctic. Career Snellmann completed her PhD in ethnology at the University of Helsinki in 1997. Teuvo Pakkala
Teuvo Pakkala (originally Teodor Oskar Frosterus, 9 April 186217 May 1925) was a Finnish author, playwright, reporter, linguist and teacher. Pakkala is considered to be one of the realists of the 1880s and 1890s, and he is also often called a naturalist. Pakkala's works are especially noted for their portrayal of children. Life Teuvo Pakkala was born in Oulu, Finland, where he also went to school. He studied medicine, languages and history in the university. His writing career started as a journalist. He also translated works of Norwegian writers Henrik Ibsen, Jonas Lie, Alexander Kielland and Knut Hamsun. As a journalist he followed closely the industrialisation and urbanisation of Oulu in the 1870s and 1880s. Pakkala was skilful in describing people, especially women and children. Johannes Linnankoski
Johannes Linnankoski (originally Vihtori Johan Peltonen, 18 October 1869 – 10 August 1913) was a Finland, Finnish author and playwright, which mainly influenced writing in the Golden Age of Finnish Art. His most famous work is the romance novel, ''The Song of the Blood-Red Flower'' (1905). His primary themes were guilt, punishment, and redemption as moral questions. Life Linnankoski was born in Vakkola, Askola and was active in the cultural life of Eastern Uusimaa. He was one of the founders of the bank in Porvoo and also founded Finnish-language schools and daily newspapers such as ''Uusimaa (newspaper), Uusimaa'', the first Finnish-language newspaper situated outside of the major towns of Uusimaa. Erkki Karu (born Erland Fredrik Kumlander) (10 April 1887 Helsinki – 8 December 1935 Helsinki) was a Finnish film director, screenwriter and producer. He was one of the pioneers of the Finnish cinema. Career Karu started his career as a member of a theater troupe in 1907. Torne (river)
The Torne, also known as the Tornio ( fi, Tornionjoki, sv, Torne älv, , se, Duortneseatnu, fit, Tornionväylä), is a river in northern Sweden and Finland. For approximately half of its length, it defines the border between these two countries. In the upper parts, the river is situated in Sweden before it meets the Muonio River where it adjoins the international border. It rises at the lake Torneträsk near the border with Norway and flows generally southeast for a distance of into the Gulf of Bothnia.
