Teuvo Pakkala
Teuvo Pakkala (originally Teodor Oskar Frosterus, 9 April 186217 May 1925) was a Finnish author, playwright, reporter, linguist and teacher. Pakkala is considered to be one of the realists of the 1880s and 1890s, and he is also often called a naturalist. Pakkala's works are especially noted for their portrayal of children. Life Teuvo Pakkala was born in Oulu, Finland, where he also went to school. He studied medicine, languages and history in the university. His writing career started as a journalist. He also translated works of Norwegian writers Henrik Ibsen, Jonas Lie, Alexander Kielland and Knut Hamsun. As a journalist he followed closely the industrialisation and urbanisation of Oulu in the 1870s and 1880s. Pakkala was skilful in describing people, especially women and children. He worked as a teacher 1907–1920, and shows in his books about children an unprecedented understanding of child psychology. His works were not much appreciated in his own time. One of the ... Oulu
Oulu ( , ; sv, Uleåborg ) is a city, municipality and a seaside resort of about 210,000 inhabitants in the region of North Ostrobothnia, Finland. Finn Film is a Finnish motion picture corporation. It was established in 1921 but made only one movie before finishing business in 1922. It was re-established in 2001. Original corporation The original Finn Film was founded in 1921 in Oulu, Finland, by playwright Teuvo Pakkala, Dr. Toivo T. Kaila, and M.Sc. G.H. Michelson. Finn Film produced its first and only movie, ''Sotapolulla'', in 1921. It was shown in movie theaters starting on 30 January 1922 (release date: 20 January 1922). Fridtjof Nansen
Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen (; 10 October 186113 May 1930) was a Norwegian polymath and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. He gained prominence at various points in his life as an explorer, scientist, diplomat, and humanitarian. He led the team that made the first crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888, traversing the island on cross-country skis. He won international fame after reaching a record northern latitude of 86°14′ during his ''Fram'' expedition of 1893–1896. Although he retired from exploration after his return to Norway, his techniques of polar travel and his innovations in equipment and clothing influenced a generation of subsequent Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. Hector Malot
Hector-Henri Malot (Hector Malot) (20 May 1830 – 18 July 1907) was a French writer born in La Bouille, Seine-Maritime. He studied law in Rouen and Paris, but eventually literature became his passion. He worked as a dramatic critic for ''Lloyd Francais'' and as a literary critic for ''L'Opinion Nationale''. His first book, published in 1859, was ''Les Amants''. In total Malot wrote over 70 books. By far his most famous book is '' Sans Famille'' (''Nobody's Boy'', 1878), which deals with the travels of the young orphan Remi, who is sold to the street musician Vitalis at age 8. ''Sans Famille'' gained fame as a children's book, though it was not originally intended as such. He announced his retirement as an author of fiction in 1895, but in 1896 he returned with the novel ''L'amour Dominateur'' as well as the account of his literary life ''Le Roman de mes Romans'' (''The Novel of my Novels''). Friedrich von Hellwald (29 March 1842, in Padua, Italy – 1 November 1892, in Cannstatt, Germany) was an Austrian writer on geography and the history of civilization. Biography He was born at Padua. He entered the Austrian Army in 1858, and was a lieutenant of cavalry (1866) in the war with Prussia. In 1866 he became an editor of the Austrian military magazine, '' Österreichische Militärische Zeitschrift''.
