Trutch Island is an island on the North Coast of British Columbia, Canada. Estevan Group
The Estevan Group, formerly the Estevan Islands, is a small archipelago in the Hecate Strait region of the British Columbia Coast, North Coast of British Columbia, Canada. The archipelago is located on the west side of Campania Island, which is separated from the group by Estevan Sound and is itself to the west of Gil Island (Canada), Gil Island across Squally Channel. Southeast of it and of the Estevan Group is Caamaño Sound, beyond which is Aristazabal Island; to the east of all is Princess Royal Island, the second largest on the British Columbia Coast. Sir Joseph William Trutch, (18 January 1826 – 4 March 1904) was an United Kingdom, English-born Canadians, Canadian engineer, surveying, surveyor and politician who served as first Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Early life and career Born in Ashcott, England, Trutch's early childhood was spent partly in Jamaica, although his family returned to England in 1831, where he later attended grammar school in Devon. Following an apprenticeship to civil engineer Sir John Rennie (railway engineer), John Rennie, he travelled to California after hearing news of the California Gold Rush of 1849. He arrived in British Columbia in 1859, following the Fraser River gold rush of 1858. He found employment by working various government contracts as a surveyor, and in 1862 was contracted to construct a portion of the Cariboo Road between Chapmans Bar, British Columbia, Chapmans Bar and Boston Bar, British Columbia, Boston Bar along the canyon of the Fraser River.
