Torolf Eklund
Torolf Eklund (13 April 1912 – 12 December 2000) was a Finnish aircraft designer, who worked at the Valtion lentokonetehdas between 1935 and 1962. He privately designed and built his own small single-seat flying boat, the Eklund TE-1, in the late 1940s. He was born in Helsinki. He graduated from the Helsinki University of Technology with a master's degree in aviation during the 1930s. As a student he formed the aviation club Polyteknikkojen Ilmailukerho, which still exists today. He was a reserve officer in the Finnish Air Force and was working for the aircraft industry during World War II. Eklund was also the chairman for the Finnish Aviation Engineer's Club between 1953 and 1954. Valtion Lentokonetehdas
''Valtion lentokonetehdas'' (State aircraft factory) was a Finnish aircraft manufacturing company that was founded on 23 February 1928 from the IVL or I.V.L. factory (Ilmailuvoimien lentokonetehdas, Finnish Air Force Aircraft Factory), founded in 1921. The company was transferred from being subordinate to the Finnish Air Force to being subordinate to the Ministry of Defence. The company, and its products were named with the prefix VL. Island factory The company began its production at Suomenlinna and Santahamina in Helsinki. The factory did not have an airport, only the sea and sea ice could be used for take-off and landing. Flying Boat
A flying boat is a type of fixed-winged seaplane with a hull, allowing it to land on water. It differs from a floatplane in that a flying boat's fuselage is purpose-designed for floatation and contains a hull, while floatplanes rely on fuselage-mounted floats for buoyancy. Though the fuselage provides buoyancy, flying boats may also utilize under-wing floats or wing-like projections (called sponsons) extending from the fuselage for additional stability. Eklund TE-1
The Eklund TE-1 was a Finnish-built single-seat flying boat of the late 1940s. Design and development The TE-1 was designed in late 1948 by Torolf Eklund, who was a Finnish aircraft designer for Valtion Lentokonetehdas between 1935 and 1962. The TE-1 was financed and built by Eklund as a private venture. Operational history The TE-1 first flew in February 1949 powered by a 28 h.p. Poinsard engine. This powerplant suffered a crankcase failure, and as spare parts were no longer available, it was replaced by a Continental A40-5 engine. At the time of its first flight, the TE-1 was claimed to be the world's smallest flying boat. The aircraft last flew in 1969. Polyteknikkojen Ilmailukerho (PIK) is the student flying club of the Aalto University. As well as a flying club, it develops light aircraft and gliders, often on a small scale but sometimes its designs have been produced in quantity. Approximately 536 aircraft have been built by the organisation and its sub-contractors. It is similar to the Akafliegs of German Universities in that students make designs with advice from staff to give practical experience before seeking employment. The Valmet Tuuli was a trainer aircraft, developed for the Finnish Air Force by the State Aircraft Factory (''Valtion lentokonetehdas'', VL). The aircraft was to be produced in 3 different versions. The last version, Tuuli III was redesigned from scratch, and is basically an entirely different aircraft. History The design work on the aircraft was initiated in February 1941 under the leadership of the chief engineer Martti Vainio. The aircraft was a low-winged, tandem-seated trainer aircraft. The Finnish Air Force ordered a prototype, Tuuli I, in August 1942. The design work and its construction was ended in the spring of 1944, when the aircraft manufacturer was forced to put all its efforts in repairing the front-line aircraft.
