Tom Nicol
Thomas Nicol (24 February 1870 – 10 June 1915) was a Scottish footballer who played for Burnley first as a centre forward and then as a full back in the 1890s, before later becoming a bowls champion in Southampton. Football career Burnley Nicol was born in Whitburn, West Lothian and after playing local football in Scotland with Mossend Swifts, he was one of several Scottish players recruited by Burnley. For his Burnley debut on 7 March 1891 he replaced leading scorer Claude Lambie, who had returned to Scotland, and scored a hat-trick in a 6–2 victory over Preston North End. Preston had won the Football League in each of the two preceding years, but the defeat at Turf Moor resulted in them finishing the 1890–91 as runners-up, two points behind Everton. Centre Forward
Forwards (also known as attackers) are outfield positions in an association football team who play the furthest up the pitch and are therefore most responsible for scoring goals as well as assisting them. The Football League
The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, the league is the oldest such competition in the world. It was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League. The EFL is divided into the Championship, League One and League Two, with 24 clubs in each division, 72 in total, with promotion and relegation between them; the top Championship clubs change places with the lowest-placed clubs in the Premier League, and the bottom clubs of League Two with the top clubs of the National League. Offside (association Football)
Offside is one of the laws in association football, codified in Law 11 of the Laws of the Game. The law states that a player is in an offside position if any of their body parts, except the hands and arms, are in the opponents' half of the pitch, and closer to the opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent (the last opponent is usually, but not necessarily, the goalkeeper). Being in an offside position is not an offence in itself, but a player so positioned when the ball is played by a teammate can be judged guilty of an offside offence if they receive the ball or will otherwise become "involved in active play", will "interfere with an opponent", or will "gain an advantage" by being in that position. Joe Lofthouse
Joseph Morris Lofthouse (14 April 1865 – 10 June 1919) was an English people, English association football, footballer. Playing career Joseph Lofthouse was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, Blackburn on 14 April 1865. A talented footballer he joined Blackburn Rovers, in 1882, from King's Own Lancaster Regiment who he signed for as a Youth player in 1881. Although only 18 years old he was a member of the team in the 1883–84 season. After Blackburn Rovers beat Notts County F.C., Notts County in the semi-final of the FA Cup, the club made an official complaint to the Football Association (FA) that John Inglis (footballer, born 1859), John Inglis was a professional player. William John Herbert Arthur (14 February 1863 – 27 November 1930) was an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Blackburn Rovers and the English national side. Early and personal life Arthur was born on 14 February 1863 in Blackburn, Lancashire, the eldest of three sons. By 1881 he was assisting his father's business as a leather dealer. He married in 1891, and had two children, a daughter and a son. Club career Arthur began his career with local clubs Lower Bank Academy and King's Own, before joining Blackburn Rovers during 1880-81 season. Hugh Galbraith (22 December 1868 – 1930) (another source believes Hugh Galbraith was born in Waterford, Ireland and was born on 2 December 1867) was a Scottish footballer, most notable as a player for Luton Town. Career According to the source that states Hugh Galbraith was born in Ireland also records that he started his career in 1886 at a club called Glasgow East End F.C. In 1887 Galbraith then moved to Dundee Our Boys. According to Wikipedia Galbraith joined a club that got to the Quarter-Finals of the Scottish Cup. Jack Hillman
William John 'Jack' Hillman (30 October 1871 – 16 December 1952) was an English football goalkeeper who played for Burnley, Everton, Dundee, Manchester City and Millwall. Career Jack Hillman was born in Tavistock, Devon, but it was in Lancashire that he made his reputation. In 1890 Hillman was playing for the Young Pilgrims, a junior side affiliated with Plymouth Argyle. An impressive performance against Burnley reserves prompted the Football League club to sign him, and he made his first team debut in 1891. He played for the club for the majority of the next decade, aside from two years at Everton, and a brief spell at Dundee. Hillman was known throughout his career as "Happy Jack" and spent four years at Turf Moor before being sold to Everton for £150 in February 1895.
