Told Slant
Told Slant is a low-fi indie band from Brooklyn. It is led by Felix Walworth, who is non-binary, and uses they/them pronouns. Walworth is also involved in other projects, including Gabby's World, Florist, and Bellows. David Anthony, writing for ''The A.V. Club'', praised Walworth for their ability to produce "simple, heartbreaking songs". History Told Slant was formed at Bard High School Early College where Walworth met Kalb and started playing music together. They released ''Still Water'' in 2012, and their sophomore album ''Going By'' in 2016. Walworth writes and records all of the parts to the songs, bringing in other members for live performances. Told Slant was scheduled to play at the 2017 South by Southwest festival but canceled over fears that the festival would aid in deporting foreign artists. Indie Folk
Indie folk is a music genre that arose in the 1990s among musicians from indie rock scenes influenced by folk music. Indie folk hybridizes the acoustic guitar melodies of traditional folk music with contemporary instrumentation. The genre has its earliest origins in 1990s folk artists who displayed alternative rock influences in their music, such as Ani DiFranco and Dan Bern, and acoustic artists such as Elliott Smith and Will Oldham. Sadcore
Sadcore is a subgenre occasionally identified by music journalists to describe examples of alternative rock characterised by bleak lyrics, downbeat melodies and slower tempos, or alternatively, songs with deceivingly upbeat melodies that are simultaneously characterised by depressive lyrical undertones or imagery. It is a loose definition and does not describe a specific movement, group or scene. It is categorised by AllMusic's reference guide as music "by and for the depressed". Sadcore is sometimes considered synonymous with the term slowcore, and both share the distinction of often being dismissed as a label by the bands they would describe. Lo-fi (also typeset as lofi or low-fi; short for low fidelity) is a music or production quality in which elements usually regarded as imperfections in the context of a recording or performance are present, sometimes as a deliberate choice. Double Double Whammy
Double Double Whammy is an independent record label founded by Dave Benton and Mike Caridi in October 2011 whilst studying at SUNY Purchase, a liberal arts college in New York state. History Double Double Whammy was founded by Dave Benton and Mike Caridi in October 2011. The pair started releasing tapes for their own band LVL UP, and local bands at SUNY Purchase, the college they attended in New York state. They considered the label inspired by other indie rock labels such as Merge and K. In 2014 Double Double Whammy released the breakout albums from Frankie Cosmos and, fellow SUNY Purchase alumnus, Mitski. After college the label moved to Brooklyn. Gabby's World (band)
Gabby's World (formerly Ó and Eskimeaux) is the recording project of Gabrielle Smith, an American singer-songwriter and producer from Brooklyn. Smith began making and releasing experimental ambient music in 2007. Since then, the solo project has turned into a four-piece indie pop band made up of Bellows's Oliver Kalb, Told Slant’s Felix Walworth, Sharpless's Jack Greenleaf and Smith. Felix Walworth has since been replaced by Ian Cory of Lamniformes. Early life Gabrielle Smith grew up in New York City. Florist is an American indie folk band from Brooklyn, New York. History Florist began in 2013 with the release of a six-track EP titled ''We Have Been This Way Forever''. Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) is an early college school, with multiple campuses in the United States. The school allows students to begin their college studies two years early, graduating with a Bard College Associate in Arts degree in addition to their high school diploma.
