Tobit (game)
Tobit is a draughts game that resembles Turkish and Armenian draughts in that pieces move orthogonally (forward, backward, sideways i.e. left and right). It especially resembles Turkish draughts in that pieces only move orthogonally. History The game is played in the Republic of Khakassia of Russia, and is associated with the Khakas people. The history and etymology of the game is unclear. There are several variants as in different size boards and number of pieces, but the one described here has become the standard. In the past, the grid board was drawn on the ground with animal bones (such as sheep bones) used as playing pieces. The first competitions with the standard variant only began in 2002, and has grown significantly since then. Turkish Draughts
Turkish draughts (Turkish: Dama)(Armenian: շաշկի)(Arabic: دامە)(Kurmanji: دامە) is a variant of draughts (checkers) played in Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Kuwait, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and several other locations around the Mediterranean Sea and Middle East. Rules On an 8×8 board, 16 ' are lined up on each side, in two rows. The back rows are vacant. A traditional Turkish draughts is mono-coloured. White moves first. Men move orthogonally forwards or sideways one square, capturing by means of a jump; they cannot move or capture backwards or diagonally. When a man reaches the back row, it promotes to a ''king''. Armenian Draughts
Armenian draughts, or Tama, is a variant of draughts (or checkers) played in Armenia. The rules are similar to Turkish draughts, Dama. Armenian draughts, however, allows for diagonal movement. Rules On an 8×8 board, 16 men are lined up on each side in two rows, skipping the first and last row. From a player's point of view, the second and third rows are filled with men of his own color, and the sixth and seventh rows are filled with the opponent's men. Players alternate turns with each making one move per turn. Pieces initially consist of men only. When reaching the opposite side of the board, men are "crowned" to pieces called kings. A man can move forwards, straight ahead or diagonally, or sideways to an orthogonally adjacent field if that field is empty. Khakas People
The Khakas (also spelled Khakass; Khakas: , ''khakas'', , ''tadar'', , ''khakastar'', , ''tadarlar'') are a Turkic indigenous people of Siberia, who live in the republic of Khakassia, Russia. They speak the Khakas language. The Khakhassian people are direct descendants of various ancient cultures that have inhabited southern Siberia, including the Andronovo culture, Samoyedic peoples, the Tagar culture, and the Yenisei Kirghiz culture. Despite the name, the Fuyu Kyrgyz language is not related to the Kyrgyz language, which is of Kipchak origin. Dameo is an abstract strategy board game for two players invented by Christian Freeling in 2000. It is a variant of the game draughts (or checkers) and is played on an 8×8 checkered gameboard. Game rules Dameo is played on an 8×8 checkerboard with 18 pieces per player. Each player's pieces are arranged so that the bottom three rows, from the perspective of the player, are filled from a1 to h1, b2 to g2, and c3 to f3, forming a distinctive trapezoid shape. History Dameo has its origins in Christian Freeling's 1988 gam''Bushka'' inspired by the traditional Madagascar game Fanorona. Keny (game)
Keny (Russian: Кены) is a draughts game played in the Caucasus and nearby areas of Turkey. Keny is actually the Ossetian name for the game as it is most popular in Ossetia, a region in the Caucasus. In Armenia, it is called Vayut tama (Russian: вают тама). The game is also known as Caucasian checkers (Russian: кавказские шашки). There may be slight variations of the game, but the rules described here are from Nikita Sokolov (Никита Соколов) from his article "A long time ago, we did not take checkers into our hands ..." Abstract Strategy Games
Abstract strategy games admit a number of definitions which distinguish these from strategy games in general, mostly involving no or minimal narrative theme, outcomes determined only by player choice (with no randomness), and perfect information. For example, Go is a pure abstract strategy game since it fulfills all three criteria; chess and related games are nearly so but feature a recognizable theme of ancient warfare; and Stratego is borderline since it is deterministic, loosely based on 19th-century Napoleonic warfare, and features concealed information.
