Tipperary Senior Hurling Team Season 2017
The 2017 season was Michael Ryan's second year as manager of the Tipperary senior hurling team. On 28 November 2016, Pádraic Maher was named as the new captain of the Tipperary Senior hurling team for 2017 with Séamus Callanan named as vice-captain. Intersport/Elverys continued as sponsors of Tipperary GAA for a third year. Tipperary wore a New Jersey design for the first time on 23 April in the League final against Galway. The new design has Intersport with Elverys underneath with Elverys.ie on the back shoulders. The Tipperary players and management team traveled to Miami in December 2016 for a team holiday where they rang in the new year. Tipperary again chose not to compete in the Munster Senior Hurling League which was held in January. Tipperary were going for a three in a row of Munster titles and were also defending their All-Ireland title. Tipperary County Hurling Team
The Tipperary county hurling team represents Tipperary in hurling and is governed by Tipperary GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the Munster Senior Hurling Championship and the National Hurling League. Tipperary's home ground is Semple Stadium, Thurles. The team's manager is Liam Cahill. John Madden (hurler)
John Madden (born 13 February 1968) is an Irish hurling selector and former player whose championship career with the Tipperary senior team lasted three years from 1989 to 1991. Born in Lorrha, County Tipperary, Madden first appeared at underage levels with the Lorrha–Dorrha club. He subsequently joined the club's senior team and won one North Tipperary championship medal in 1989. Madden made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he was picked on the Tipperary minor panel, however, he enjoyed little success in this grade. After failing to make the Tipperary under-21 team in 1987, he was added to the panel in 1988 before claiming Munster and All-Ireland medals in the grade in 1989. Cathal Barrett
Cathal Barrett (born 21 July 1993) is an Irish hurler who plays for Tipperary Championship club Holycross–Ballycahill and at inter-county level with the Tipperary senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a right corner-back. Playing career Thurles CBS Barrett first came to prominence as a hurler with Thurles CBS. He played in every grade before eventually joining the senior hurling team. On 26 February 2010, he lined out at right wing-back when Thurles CBS drew 1-12 apiece with Ardscoil Rís from Limerick in the Harty Cup final. Barrett retained his position on the starting fifteen for the replay on 6 March 2010 which resulted in a 4-15 to 2-21 draw. Portroe GAA
Portroe GAA is a Tipperary GAA club which is located in County Tipperary, Ireland. Both hurling and Gaelic football are played in the "North-Tipperary" divisional competitions. The club is centred on the village of Portroe which is eight miles outside Nenagh. History Portroe is in the centre of a traditional slate quarrying district of Northwest Tipperary, several kilometers outside Nenagh, that sent many emigrants to the Vermont USA slate belt in the 19th century, where to this day their descendants continue to receive honours in American football, basketball, baseball, soccer, athletics and distance running. Darren Gleeson
Darren Gleeson (born 19 March 1981) is an Irish hurler and manager who plays for Tipperary Senior Championship club Portroe and is currently managing the Antrim senior hurling team. He played for the Tipperary senior hurling team for 10 seasons, during which time he usually lined out as a goalkeeper. Playing career Portroe Gleeson plays his club hurling with Portroe and has enjoyed some success. In 2012 he won a North Tipperary championship medal following a 3-16 to 1-19 defeat of Toomevara. Paul Flynn is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Kildangan and has been a member of the Tipperary senior inter-county hurling team since 2017. He is also the brother of fellow Tipperary hurler Alan Flynn. Conor Stakelum
Conor Stakelum (born 1968) is an Irish hurling selector and former player. He is a current selector with the Tipperary senior team. Born in Borrisoleigh, County Tipperary, Stakelum was born into a family that had a strong association with hurling. His uncle, Pat Stakelum, was an All-Ireland-winning captain with Tipperary in 1949. Stakelum quickly became involved with the Borris–Ileigh team at underage levels, winning minor and under-21 county championship medals. He quickly progressed onto the senior club team and won a set of All-Ireland, Munster and county senior championship medals during the 1986-87 season. Stakelum made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he joined the Tipperary minor team in 1986. After little success in this grade he progressed onto the under-21 team, winning an All-Ireland medal in 1989.
