Portroe GAA
Portroe GAA is a Tipperary GAA club which is located in County Tipperary, Ireland. Both hurling and Gaelic football are played in the "North-Tipperary" divisional competitions. The club is centred on the village of Portroe which is eight miles outside Nenagh. History Portroe is in the centre of a traditional slate quarrying district of Northwest Tipperary, several kilometers outside Nenagh, that sent many emigrants to the Vermont USA slate belt in the 19th century, where to this day their descendants continue to receive honours in American football, basketball, baseball, soccer, athletics and distance running. The local school side being the Fair Haven "Slaters" Many other natives of this area emigrated to Australia. The Tipperary County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae Thiobraid Árann) or Tipperary GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Tipperary and the Tipperary county teams. County Tipperary holds an honoured place in the history of the GAA as the organisation was founded in Hayes' Hotel, Thurles, on 1 November 1884. The county football team was the second from the province of Munster both to win an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC), as well as to appear in the final, following Limerick. Tipperary Intermediate Hurling Championship
The Tipperary Intermediate Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition organised by the Tipperary County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1979 for the third-tier hurling teams in the county of Tipperary in Ireland. The series of games are played during the summer and autumn months with the county final currently being played at Semple Stadium in October. The championship has always been played on a regional basis, whereby the respective champions from the Mid, North, South and West championships contest the county series of games. However, in recent years, the championship has followed the same system as the senior grade in Tipperary. Currently (2018) there are 21 teams in the county championship divided up into 6 groups (3 groups with 4 teams, 3 groups with 3 teams). Robert Byrne (hurler)
Robert Byrne (born 1997) is an Irish hurler who plays for Tipperary Senior Championship club Portroe and at inter-county level with the Tipperary senior hurling team. He usually lines out on the bench. Playing career Nenagh CBS Byrne first came to prominence as a hurler with Nenagh CBS. He played in all grades before joining the school's senior team and made several appearances in the Dr. Harty Cup. Limerick Institute of Technology After lining out for the Limerick Institute of Technology freshers' team in his first year, Byrne made his first appearance in the Fitzgibbon Cup on 22 January 2018. He was at midfield for LIT's 3-15 to 2-17 defeat by DCU Dóchas Éireann. Darren Gleeson
Darren Gleeson (born 19 March 1981) is an Irish hurler and manager who plays for Tipperary Senior Championship club Portroe and is currently managing the Antrim senior hurling team. He played for the Tipperary senior hurling team for 10 seasons, during which time he usually lined out as a goalkeeper. Playing career Portroe Gleeson plays his club hurling with Portroe and has enjoyed some success. In 2012 he won a North Tipperary championship medal following a 3-16 to 1-19 defeat of Toomevara. Tipperary Under-21 Gleeson first played for Tipperary as a member of the under-21 team during the 2002 Munster Championship when he served as sub-goalkeeper to team captain Damien Young. John Sheedy
John Sheedy (born 1959) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a goalkeeper with the Tipperary senior team. Born in Portroe, County Tipperary, Sheedy first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Tipperary minor team, before later joining the under-21 hurling and junior teams. He made his senior debut during the 1983 championship. Sheedy enjoyed a brief career with Tipperary, however, he enjoyed little success. At club level Sheedy enjoyed a lengthy career with Portroe. His brother, Liam Sheedy, also played with Tipperary and is an All-Ireland-winning manager. Throughout his inter-county career, Sheedy made 7 championship appearances for Tipperary. Fair Haven is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,736 at the 2020 census. Within the town is located the census-designated place of Fair Haven.
