Thorvald Andersen
Thorvald Andersen (8 April 1883 - 3 May 1935 ) was a Danish architect. He contributed to Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen in the 1920s. Family Carl Christian Thorvald Andersen was born in the parish of Årup on the island of Funen in Assens Municipality, Denmark. He is the son of Hans Ditlev Andersen and Petra Vilhelmine Johanne Louise Andersen. He attended Odense Technical School, with a graduation in 1903; He was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1904 and left in 1910. He worked from 1907 to 1912 with Martin Borch (1852-1937) at Rigshospitalet which, starting in 1910, was relocated to its present location consisting of buildings surrounding a central garden. He worked for a number of years from 1912 with Kristoffer Varming (1865-1936). He was the supervisory architect and consultant for the Ministry of Justice buildings. Rigshospitalet
Rigshospitalet (meaning ''The National'', ''State'' or ''Hospital of the Realm'', but not usually translated) is the largest public and teaching hospital in Copenhagen and the most highly specialised hospital in Denmark. The hospital's main building is a 16-storey functionalist highrise, one of the tallest structures in the central parts of the city. Rigshospitalet neighbours the Panum Building which houses the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. As a teaching hospital it is part of the framework organisation Copenhagen University Hospital. Name The Danish name is not usually translated to English. Funen
Funen ( da, Fyn, ), with an area of , is the third-largest island of Denmark, after Zealand and Vendsyssel-Thy. It is the 165th-largest island in the world. The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts ( da, Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi - Billedkunst Skolerne) has provided education in the arts for more than 250 years, playing its part in the development of the art of Denmark. History The Royal Danish Academy of Portraiture, Sculpture, and Architecture in Copenhagen was inaugurated on 31 March 1754, and given as a gift to the King Frederik V on his 31st birthday. Its name was changed to the Royal Danish Academy of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in 1771. At the same event, Johann Friedrich Struensee introduced a new scheme in the academy to encourage artisan apprentices to take supplementary classes in drawing so as to develop the notion of "good taste". Martin Borch
Martin Borch (1 March 1852 – 8 February 1937) was a Danish architect. Biography Borch was born at Skerngaard near Skjern, Denmark. He was the son of Frederik Borch (1807–1868) and Johanne Frederikke Borch née Frausing (1809–1886). He attended Randers Latin School from 1863 to 1866 and C.V. Nielsen's drawing school from 1868 to 1869. From 1869 to 1877, he attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. From 1886 to 1916, Borch was a permanent architect for the Danish sugar manufacturing company, De Danske Spritfabrikker. As a royal building inspector, he received many commissions for the University of Copenhagen and Danmarks Nationalbank. From 1893 to 1899, he was an assistant at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture. He received the Eckersberg Medal twice: in 1894 and in 1901. Frederiksberg
Frederiksberg () is a part of the Capital Region of Denmark. It is formally an independent municipality, Frederiksberg Municipality, separate from Copenhagen Municipality, but both are a part of the City of Copenhagen. It occupies an area of less than 9 km2 and had a population of 103,192 in 2015. Frederiksberg is an enclave surrounded by Copenhagen Municipality. Søndermark Cemetery
Søndermark Cemetery (Danish: Søndermark Kirkegård) is a cemetery in the Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen, Denmark, located on Roskildevej, opposite Solbjerg Park Cemetery. It is the youngest of the three cemeteries in Frederiksberg Municipality. History The cemetery was designed by the landscape architect Gudmund Nyeland Brandt. Chapel and crematorium complex A competition for a combined crematorium and chapel was held in 1926 and won by Edvard Thomsen and Frits Schlegel. The complex, which in part differs from their winning proposal, was built from 1927 to 1930, and is one of the earliest examples of Modernism in religious architecture in Denmark.
