Thorne, Nevada is a rail junction and former town located in Mineral County, Nevada. In 1881, Thorne was a station on the Carson and Colorado Railway. In 1905, the spur line to Hawthorne was abandoned and Thorne became the terminus for Hawthorne. In 1909 and 1910, Thorne "became a very busy place" because of the boom at the Lucky Boy Mine and was reported to have two saloons. Thorne's post office operated from July 1912 until September 1921. In 1929, construction of the nearby Hawthorne Army Depot started with Thorne being the shipping point. In 1937, Thorne was served by the Hazen Mina branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad. At the start of World War II, Thorne was handling 380 car loads per month, with traffic peaking at 5000 cars per month during the war. Hawthorne is a census-designated place (CDP) in Mineral County, Nevada, United States. At the 2010 census, the population was 3,269, a decrease since the 2000 census, when it was 3,311. It is the county seat of Mineral County. The nearby Hawthorne Army Depot is the primary economic base of the town. History The first permanent settlement at Hawthorne was established in 1880. The townsite was selected in 1880 by H. M. Yerington, president of the Carson and Colorado Railroad Co. as a division and distribution site for the new railroad. The location was adjacent to the important Knapp's Station and Ferry Landing on the busy Esmeralda Toll Road from Wadsworth to Candelaria. Carson And Colorado Railway
The Carson and Colorado Railway was a U.S. narrow gauge railroad that ran from Mound House, Nevada, to Keeler, California below the Cerro Gordo Mines. It was incorporated on May 10, 1880 as the Carson and Colorado ''Railroad'', and construction on the railroad began on May 31, 1880. The narrow gauge track was chosen to reduce cost. Much of the route now parallels U.S. Route 95 Alternate, U.S. Route 95, Nevada State Route 360, U.S. Route 6, and U.S. Route 395. Hawthorne Army Depot (HWAD) is a U.S. Army Joint Munitions Command ammunition storage depot located near the town of Hawthorne in western Nevada in the United States. It is directly south of Walker Lake. The depot covers or 226 sq. mi. and has storage space in 2,427 bunkers. HWAD is the "World's Largest Depot". Wabuska is an unincorporated community in Lyon County, Nevada, United States. The zip code is 89447, which it shares with nearby Yerington. Wabuska (Washo language, ''White Grass'') was established in the early 1870s. A post office was opened on September 18, 1874. In 1881, the town served as the principal Mason Valley supply center on the newly constructed Carson and Colorado Railroad of a line that went from Hazen to Mina.
