Thomas W. Sutherland
Thomas W. Sutherland (c. 1817 – February 2, 1859) was an American lawyer and pioneer settler of Wisconsin and California. He was the first Village President of Madison, Wisconsin, was United States Attorney for Wisconsin for several years in the 1840s, was a member of the first Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin, and was the last Alcalde (Mayor) of San Diego, California, prior to statehood. He was the eldest son of Joel Barlow Sutherland of Philadelphia, who had been a militia officer in the War of 1812 and served as a Member of Congress when Thomas was a child. Early life and career Thomas W. Sutherland was born c. 1817 in Pennsylvania (he is listed as 33 in the 1850 San Diego Census). Joel Barlow Sutherland
Joel Barlow Sutherland (February 26, 1792 – November 15, 1861) was an American politician who served as the first president of the General Society of the War of 1812 from 1854 to 1861. He was a member of the Democratic Party who represented Pennsylvania in the United States House of Representatives (1827–1837). Early life and career Joel Barlow Sutherland was born in Gloucester County, New Jersey. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1812. He served in the War of 1812 as assistant surgeon to the "Junior Artillerists of Philadelphia," transferred to the line, and was appointed in 1814 lieutenant colonel of rifles in the State militia. Colma, California
Colma (Ohlone for "Springs") is a small incorporated List of municipalities in California, town in San Mateo County, California, on the San Francisco Peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area. The population was 1,507 at the 2020 census. The town was founded as a necropolis in 1924. With most of Colma's land dedicated to cemetery, cemeteries, the population of the dead—not specifically known but speculated to be around 1.5 million—outnumbers that of the living by a ratio of nearly a thousand to one. Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, established by Hamden Holmes Noble in 1892, is a rural cemetery located in Colma, California, a place known as the "City of the Silent".
