Thomas Graham Briggs
Sir Thomas Graham Briggs, 1st Baronet (30 September 1833 – 11 October 1887) was a Victorian land-owner in the Caribbean with property in Barbados and Nevis. He was the only child of Joseph Lyder Briggs (1792–1866) and Elizabeth Hinds Briggs. Graham Briggs owned Stoney Grove Estate, Nevis. Barbados
Barbados is an island country in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies, in the Caribbean region of the Americas, and the most easterly of the Caribbean Islands. It occupies an area of and has a population of about 287,000 (2019 estimate). Its capital and largest city is Bridgetown. Inhabited by Island Caribs, Kalinago people since the 13th century, and prior to that by other Indigenous peoples of the Americas, Amerindians, Spanish navigators took possession of Barbados in the late 15th century, claiming it for the Crown of Castile. Nevis
Nevis is a small island in the Caribbean Sea that forms part of the inner arc of the Leeward Islands chain of the West Indies. Nevis and the neighbouring island of Saint Kitts constitute one country: the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Nevis is located near the northern end of the Lesser Antilles archipelago, about east-southeast of Puerto Rico and west of Antigua. Its area is and the capital is Charlestown. Stoney Grove Estate
Stoney Grove Estate is a former plantation on the Caribbean island of Nevis. The Stoney Grove Strikers gained their name from here. The estate is in the parish of Saint John Figtree. It is about is 177 meters above sea level. It is 4.49 acres in size. The estate contains ruins of former buildings, including the great house, whose floor area was 1,900 square feet. The estate was first owned by James Tobin senior, and then his son, James Tobin (1736/7–1817), from whom it passed to his friend and business associate John Pinney. While James Tobin was an active anti-abolitionist, his son James Webbe Tobin opposed slavery and moved to Nevis in 1809. He built the Palladian mansion, whose ruins are visible today. A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James VI and I, James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. Briggs Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Briggs, one in the Baronetage of England and one in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Both creations are extinct. The Briggs (or Brigges) Baronetcy, of Haughton, Shropshire, Haughton in the County of Salop, was created in the Baronetage of England on 12 August 1641 for Morton Briggs. His son, the second Baronet, was Member of Parliament for Wenlock (UK Parliament constituency), Wenlock in 1646 and High Sheriff of Shropshire in 1665. The fourth Baronet sat as Member of Parliament for Shropshire (UK Parliament constituency), Shropshire, Bridgnorth (UK Parliament constituency), Bridgnorth and Wenlock (UK Parliament constituency), Wenlock.
