The World Beyond
''The World Beyond'' is the second of two pilots for an occult detective television series. The first pilot, ''The World of Darkness'', also starring Granville Van Dusen as Paul Taylor, premiered on Sunday, April 17, 1977. ''The World Beyond'' followed as a sequel on CBS Friday, January 27, 1978. Premise Sports writer Paul Taylor (Granville Van Dusen) died while undergoing a surgical procedure but was retrieved from the brink of death. His brush with "the world beyond" allowed the dead to communicate with him and ask him to help a living person. ''The World of Darkness'' Dead for two minutes and 37 seconds following a motorcycle accident, Paul Taylor hears ghostly voices that draw him to the New England town of Woodvale. Art Wallace
Art Wallace was an American television writer best known for his work on the gothic soap opera ''Dark Shadows''. He began work in television in the 1940s, on the anthology series '' Studio One'' and ''Kraft Television Theater''. Over the years, Wallace wrote for ''Tom Corbett, Space Cadet'', ''Combat!'', ''Star Trek'', and many other shows. The teleplay on which Dark Shadows was based was called "The House" and was an episode of the anthology series ''Goodyear Playhouse'' in 1957. When Dan Curtis had the idea for ''Dark Shadows'', he offered the job of producer to Art Wallace, who declined the job. Wallace offered to write the show and recommended Robert Costello for the job of producer. Occult detective fiction is a subgenre of detective fiction that combines the tropes of the main genre with those of supernatural, fantasy and/or horror fiction. Unlike the traditional detective who investigates murder and other common crimes, the occult detective is employed in cases involving ghosts, demons, curses, magic, vampires, undead, monsters and other supernatural elements. Barnard Hughes
Bernard Aloysius Kiernan Hughes (July 16, 1915 – July 11, 2006), known professionally as Barnard Hughes, was an American actor of television, theater and film. Hughes became famous for a variety of roles; his most notable roles came after middle age, and he was often cast as a dithering authority figure or grandfatherly elder. Personal life Hughes was born in Bedford Hills, New York, the son of Irish immigrants Marcella "Madge" (née Kiernan) and Owen Hughes. He attended La Salle Academy and Manhattan College in New York City. Hughes served in the United States Army during World War II. Hughes was married to actress Helen Stenborg. They married on April 19, 1950, and remained married until his death. Hughes was five days shy of his 91st birthday when he died.
