The Gateway District
The Gateway District are a pop punk band from Minneapolis that feature members of several other bands, including The Soviettes, Banner Pilot, The Salteens, Dear Landlord, Rivethead and Off with Their Heads. Background The band originally formed as a side project when The Soviettes and Rivethead stopped performing in 2006, but even though all of the band members are still active in other projects, they have continued with this project. The band is named after a part of Minneapolis (around Hennepin and Washington) that was considered the heart of the city at one time. Pop punk (or punk pop) is a rock music genre that combines elements of punk rock with power pop or pop. The Soviettes
The Soviettes were a punk rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota, founded in 2001. The group is composed of Annie (guitar), Sturgeon (guitar), Susy (bass guitar), and Danny ( drums), all of whom share singing and songwriting duties. History Annie, originally from Fargo, ND, moved to Minneapolis in 1995 where she met Sturgeon. They started writing songs in 2001 and were joined by Susy shortly afterward with Lane Pederson on drums. The name originates from when Annie was serving coffee at a previous job, a customer offered "your band should be called The Soviettes" instead of a tip. The band recorded their first EP, '' T.C.C.P.'', the same year. Soon Annie asked Danny to play with them permanently. Banner Pilot
Banner Pilot is a Punk rock, punk band from Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. Their music is influenced by acts such as Jawbreaker (band), Jawbreaker, The Lawrence Arms, Screeching Weasel, and Hot Water Music. History The band was formed by Nate Gangelhoff and Nick Johnson in 2005 following the dissolution of their previous band, Rivethead. The two self-released a demo the same year, garnering positive reviews from both Punknews and Razorcake. The following year they released the EP ''Pass the Poison'' and toured the East Coast, drawing the attention of Go-Kart Records. In late 2007 and early 2008, the band recorded their Go-Kart Records debut full length, ''Resignation Day''. The Salteens
The Salteens are a Canadian indie pop group based in Vancouver, British Columbia. The band released several albums of light pop music, toured in Canada and Australia; a number of their tracks were in rotation on CBC Radio. History The Salteens formed in Vancouver in 1997. Their 2000 debut LP '' Short-Term Memories'' was released on Endearing Records. For the next two years the band performed in support of this release, earning a fan base in Canada, Australia, Japan and the United States. ''Short-Term Memories'' rose to the top of Canada's national college-radio chart, and was nominated in the category of Best Alternative Album at Canadian Music Week's 2001 Independent Music Awards. Off With Their Heads (band)
Off With Their Heads is an American punk rock band formed in 2002 from Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. Since their formation, they have often featured a rotating line-up of tour players, due to members of the band often touring with other music acts. Singer/guitarist Ryan Young has noted that having different musicians helps keep the band fresh. History According to the No Idea website, the band had planned to release ''The '69 Sound'', a second singles collection of more recent split 7-inch material. However, this has since been refuted by No Idea, who commented saying "This thing will never happen." Gateway District (Minneapolis)
Kasota building in 1927 Gateway District The Gateway District of Minneapolis is centered at the convergence of Hennepin Avenue, Nicollet Avenue, and Washington Avenue. Its borders are not officially designated or recognized, but are visible as the Mississippi River to the northeast, Cedar Lake Trail and the railroad tracks to the northwest, Fifth Avenue South to the southeast. and Fourth Street South to the southwest. The district includes a significant part of the Downtown West neighborhood and abuts the North Loop. ''City Pages'' was an alternative newspaper serving the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. It featured news, film, theatre and restaurant reviews and music criticism, available free every Wednesday. It ceased publication in 2020 due to a decline in ads and revenue related to the COVID-19 pandemic. History On August 1, 1979, publishers Tom Bartel and Kristin Henning debuted ''Sweet Potato'', a monthly newspaper focused on the Twin Cities music scene. The first issue featured pop band The Cars on the cover. In October 1980, ''Sweet Potato'' went biweekly. On December 3, 1981, the newspaper went weekly and was renamed ''City Pages''.
