The Cut (2017 Film)
''The Cut'' is a 2017 Kenyan film directed by Peter Wangugi Gitau. Plot The film is about a young boy who is trying to save his younger sister from an early marriage and Female Genital Mutilation. The children manage to escape their plights and end up in a very unforgiving situation. To form a foundation for the script, children from the AMREF Dagoretti Child Protection and Development Centre penned down their experiences, and those of the society around them, which inspired the script touching on topics such as the abuse of children’s rights, alcoholism, maternal health and child marriage. Female Genital Mutilation
Female genital mutilation (FGM), also known as female genital cutting, female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) and female circumcision, is the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. The practice is found in some countries of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and within communities abroad from countries in which FGM is common. UNICEF estimated, in 2016, that 200 million women in 30 countries—Indonesia, Iraq, Yemen, and 27 African countries including Egypt—had been subjected to one or more types of FGM. Typically carried out by a traditional circumciser using a blade, FGM is conducted from days after birth to puberty and beyond. Silicon Valley African Film Festival
The Silicon Valley African Film Festival (SVAFF) is an annual film festival held in California to promote an understanding and appreciation of Africa and Africans through moving images. Nigerian filmmaker Chike Nwoffiah founded the SVAFF in 2010 and has served as its director since. Swahili, also known by its local name , is the native language of the Swahili people, who are found primarily in Tanzania, Kenya and Mozambique (along the East African coast and adjacent litoral islands).
