The Country Innocence
''The Country Innocence; Or, The Chamber-maid Turn'd Quaker'' is a 1677 comedy play by the English writer John Leanerd. It was originally performed by the King's Company at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London. It borrowed very heavily from the 1647 work ''The Countrie Girl'' by Thomas Brewer (writer), Thomas Brewer. John Leanerd
John Leanerd ( fl. 1679) was a British playwright, notorious as a plagiarist. Works Leanerd published: * '' The Country Innocence; or, the Chambermaid turn'd Quaker'', London, a comedy acted at the London Theatre Royal in Lent, 1677, by the younger members of the company. It was ''The Country Girl'' (1647, sometimes attributed to Anthony Brewer) under a new title. * '' The Rambling Justice; or, the Jealous Husbands, with the Humours of Sir John Twiford'', performed at the same theatre; the incidents are mostly borrowed from Thomas Middleton's ''More Dissemblers Besides Women'', 1657. To Leanerd has also been ascribed a comedy '' The Counterfeits'', London, 1679, acted at the Duke's Theatre in 1678. The plot was taken from a translated Spanish novel ''The Trepanner Trepanned''. Joseph Haines
Joseph Haines (died 4 April 1701), also known as Jo Haines, was a 17th-century actor, singer, dancer, guitar player, fortune teller, and author. ''The Life of the Late Famous Comedian, Jo. Hayns'', possibly written by fellow player Tobias Thomas, "must contain some grains of truth, but is so riddled with fancy that one can scarcely sort them out", according to the ''Biographical Dictionary of Actors'' (Highfill, et al. 1973–93). Nothing certain is known of Haines' early life. He joined a troupe of strolling players in Cambridge in 1667, joined a company of young performers at the Hatton Garden "nursery" in London in 1668, and there caught the eye of Thomas Killigrew and was invited to join Killigrew's patent company, the King's Company. Haines soon became well known as a song-and-dance man, comedian, and eccentric. Mary Knep
Mary Knep (died 1681), also Knepp, Nepp, Knip, or Knipp, was an English actress and one of the first generation of female performers to appear on the public stage during the Restoration era. Acting career Knep was primarily a singer and dancer, but "developed into a first-rate actress". She began her career with the King's Company, which was under the management of Thomas Killigrew. She made her debut in the title role of Jonson's ''Epicene'' on 1 June 1664. Before this, she had been cast as Lucetta in Killigrew's 1664 planned production of his ''Thomaso'', with an all-female cast, but this had been cancelled before completion. Sarah Cooke
Sarah Cooke (died 1688) was an English stage actress of the seventeenth century. She was a member of the King's Company, based at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. She played a number of lead roles during the 1680s. Her aunt was the governess to the maids of honour of the Duchess of York in the 1660s. After some time working in this role alongside her aunt she was discovered by the Earl of Rochester, who promoted her theatrical career. In hear early years with the King's Company she mostly appeared on tour or with the nursery company, devoted to developing new talent. It was likely during this time she was under the management of John Coysh. Rebecca Marshall
Rebecca Marshall ( fl. 1663 – 1677) was a noted English actress of the Restoration era, one of the first generation of women performers on the public stage in Britain. She was the younger sister of Anne Marshall, another prominent actress of the period. The younger Marshall sister began acting with the King's Company, under the management of Thomas Killigrew, around 1663; she remained with that troupe for her full career, except for a final year with the rival Duke's Company in 1677. She acted with her sister Anne at least once, in John Dryden's ''The Maiden Queen'' in 1664; Anne played Candiope, and Rebecca played the Queen. Carey Perin (occasionally written as Perrin) was an English stage actor of the seventeenth century. Marmaduke Watson
Marmaduke Watson was an English stage actor of the seventeenth century. Part of the King's Company based at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, he was one of the actors who sided with Charles Killigrew during a dispute in the company in 1677. In 1682 when the United Company was formed he left and went to Dublin to join the Smock Alley Theatre. Martin Powell (actor)
Martin Powell was an English stage actor of the seventeenth century. Powell was a member of the King's Company from 1669 onwards at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London. He was one of several actors who briefly left for Scotland in 1678 after a dispute with the management, before returning to Drury Lane. In 1682 he joined the merged United Company. Billed throughout his career as Mr. Powell, some of his later appearances can be confused with those of his son George Powell. Philip Griffin
Philip Griffin was an English stage actor of the seventeenth century and early eighteenth century. He joined the King's Company at Drury Lane during the 1670s, and was later a member of the merged United Company from 1685. He was named as a manager at Drury Lane in 1695, but then took military service and was styled as Captain Griffin. Theatre Royal, Drury Lane
The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, commonly known as Drury Lane, is a West End theatre and Grade I listed building in Covent Garden, London, England. The building faces Catherine Street (earlier named Bridges or Brydges Street) and backs onto Drury Lane. The building is the most recent in a line of four theatres which were built at the same location, the earliest of which dated back to 1663, making it the oldest theatre site in London still in use. According to the author Peter Thomson, for its first two centuries, Drury Lane could "reasonably have claimed to be London's leading theatre". For most of that time, it was one of a handful of patent theatres, granted monopoly rights to the production of "legitimate" drama in London (meaning spoken plays, rather than opera, dance, concerts, or plays with music).
