The Convocation
The Convocation (formerly The Convocation Of...) is an American psychedelic rock band from Baltimore, Maryland. History As The Convocation Of..., the band was formed by George France, Tonie Joy, and Guy Blakeslee in August 1998. Joy had previously played in the groups Moss Icon, Universal Order of Armageddon, The Great Unraveling, and Born Against. Following their debut ''Lab Remix Series Vol. 3'' EP, the group's self-titled debut album was released on Gold Standard Laboratories in 2000. A follow-up, ''Pyramid Technology'', appeared on Tigerstyle Records in 2001. In early 2002, Blakeslee left the group and founded The Entrance Band. The Convocation Of... went on a hiatus. With Matthew Hall (formerly of The Red Scare) on bass, the band reunited under the name The Convocation in 2005. Moss Icon
Moss Icon is an American post-hardcore band formed in late 1986 in Annapolis, Maryland, United States. Its original lineup comprised vocalist Jonathan Vance, guitarist Tonie Joy, bassist Monica DiGialleonardo, and drummer Mark Laurence. Alex Badertscher joined as second guitarist in 1990. Moss Icon is considered to be an early influence on the hardcore punk splinter genre known as post-hardcore, as well as on the eventual development of emo, although the band members themselves have repeatedly denied knowingly contributing to the latter genre in any way. The Entrance Band (formerly called Entrance) is a band started by Guy Blakeslee (born April 29, 1981). Their style of music has been described as psychedelic rock or stoner rock. Blakeslee was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland and first gained notice as a member of The Convocation Of.... He later left the band and moved to Chicago to pursue a solo career under the guise of the name Entrance. He performed regularly for the next 18 months at a bar called The Hideout, which eventually gained him the attention of Tiger Style Records. Entrance toured with Sonic Youth, Devendra Banhart, Will Oldham, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Dungen and Cat Power. Baltimore City Paper
''Baltimore City Paper'' was a free alternative weekly newspaper published in Baltimore, Maryland, founded in 1977 by Russ Smith and Alan Hirsch. The most recent owner was the Baltimore Sun Media Group, which purchased the paper in 2014 from Times-Shamrock Communications, which had owned the newspaper since 1987. It was distributed on Wednesdays in distinctive yellow boxes found throughout the Baltimore area. The paper folded in 2017, due to the collapse of advertising revenue income to print media. The Media Group's closure announcement happened at the same meeting immediately after recognizing ''City Paper'' staff joining the Washington-Baltimore News Guild. Anthony R. "Tonie" Joy is an American musician based in Baltimore, Maryland. Joy is known for his work in various underground rock and post-hardcore bands. He ran the independent record label Vermin Scum from 1989 until 2001. Musical career Having been inspired by his father Bill's early '70s acid rock band Grok and previous group The Verdicts, Joy began playing music as a teenager. Universal Order Of Armageddon
Universal Order of Armageddon was an American hardcore band, active from 1992 to 1994 and reformed in 2010. History The band formed in September 1992. By early 1993, after quickly gaining a small but devoted following, they recorded and toured the East Coast. They became known for their extreme short chaotic performances, which sometimes resulted in complete destruction. Larry Livermore (founder of Lookout! Records) was so impressed by their live performance that he stated in a magazine column that punk bands should take note of U.O.A. and bring back this type of energy into punk rock. Drummer Brooks Headley once said, "Our live shows are like turning on a vacuum cleaner for like ten minutes". The Great Unraveling was an American post-punk rock band from Baltimore, Maryland. The band was fronted by Tonie Joy of Moss Icon, Universal Order of Armageddon, and Born Against. They were active from 1995 to 1997. History The Great Unraveling was founded by Joy, bassist Anthony Scott Malat (also of Universal Order of Armageddon), and drummer Randy Davis. Following the success of Universal Order of Armageddon, they quickly gained a small but devoted national fan base. Their group first released a 7" on the Vermiform Records imprint, run by Sam McPheeters of Born Against. The Olympia-based label Kill Rock Stars released the band's self-titled debut album, recorded by Steve Albini. The group also released a second 7" of material on Joy's Vermin Scum label.
