The Brothers (ferry)
''Brothers'', also known as ''The Brothers'', was a Manly ferry owned and operated by John and Joseph Gerard. She was built in 1847 by Thomas Chowney Pyrmont in New South Wales for use on Sydney Harbour. Concept and construction ''Brothers'' was a small timber paddle wheel steam ship and one of the earliest constructed in the colony. A sporadic ferry service to the Manly area had been established in the 1830s provided by a small sailing ketch operated by Barney Kearns and that service ran between Balgowlah and Balmoral after which passengers had to head overland to Milson's Point and then be rowed across the harbour by a waterman. It did not last long and passengers faced a long and difficult overland trip. Balgowlah is a suburb of northern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Balgowlah (or Bulgowlah) said to be an Aboriginal name for "North Harbour". The area now known as Balgowlah was known to the Aboriginals as Jilling. Sydney Harbour ferry services date back to the first years of Sydney's European settlement. Slow and sporadic boats ran along the Parramatta River from Sydney to Parramatta and served the agricultural settlements in between. By the mid-1830s, speculative ventures established regular services. From the late-nineteenth century the North Shore developed rapidly. A rail connection to Milsons Point took alighting ferry passengers up the North Shore line to Hornsby, New South Wales via North Sydney. Sydney Harbour's first ferries were sail and/or oar powered, but by the mid-19th century, paddle steamers were well established. Double-ended ferries became common as they did not require turning at terminating wharves in Sydney's busy but narrow bays, including at the main hub at Circular Quay. Double-ended ferries, however, provided technological challenges for screw (propeller) propulsion and Sydney's shift from paddle steamers to screw ferries in the closing years of the nineteenth century was relatively late. Phantom (ferry)
''Phantom'' was an iron paddle steamer on Sydney Harbour that ran the Circular Quay to Manly run. Built in 1858, she was the first large double-ended Manly ferry, a basic configuration that has continued through to the contemporary Manly ferries. Service history ''Phantom'' was built by JF Dow and Co of Melbourne. Her 50 hp steam engines were supplied by the builder and could push her to over 12 knots. She could carry up to 166 passengers. She steamed up to Sydney over four days arriving on 19 May 1859. She is thought to be the first vessel to wear the long-standing Manly ferry livery of dark green hull and white funnel with black topping. Henry Gilbert Smith
Henry Gilbert Smith (1802 – 1 April 1886) was an English-born Australian businessman, banker and politician, known as the "Father of Manly". He was the founder and developer of the Sydney suburb of Manly, where he built Fairlight House facing Delwood Beach. He was otherwise the chairman of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney (now National Australia Bank), of which his nephew Thomas Smith had been deputy chairman. Life and career Smith was born in Northamptonshire, England to Thomas Smith and Frances Flesher. He migrated to Tasmania in 1827 and from there to Sydney, acquiring land on the Molonglo Plain.
