Teressa Island
Teressa (Teressa language: ''Luroo'', hi, तेरेस्सा, also called Tarasa Dwip) is one of the Nicobar Islands, India. History When Austria claimed Nicobar Islands as a colony (1778-1784) on the assumption that Denmark had ababdoned its claim (1754/56-1868), they named Teressa after the Austrian Arch-duchess Maria Theresia. Extensive damage to the island's flora and fauna occurred following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Geography Teressa lies west of the neighboring island of Camorta Island, Camorta and northwest of Katchal Island, Katchal. The smaller island known as Chowra is to the north and Bompoka lies to the east. The northern portion of the island has elevations reaching 87 meters. The island has a surface area of 101.26 km2. Bompoka
Bompuka Island, also known as Poahat, is an island of India, in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Geography The Island is located 3.5 km east from Teressa. The island has dense forest and some portions have grass. There is thick coconut palm growth on the shores around the island. Abandoned Poahat Village lies on the W side of the island. The portion of sea between the Teressa and Bompuka islands provides a good shelter for ships. Demographics The Island had 2 villages: Poahat at the north, and Yatkirana at the south. both abandoned. The former villagers still maintain Coconut, Tuber Crops as seasonal villagers from Teressa come to live on the island for a short period, carrying all requirements from Teressa Island. Chowra
Chowra is an island in the Andaman and Nicobar islands group of India. It is located to the north of Teressa island and to the south of Battimalv Island in the Indian Ocean. It is also known as Choura, Tatat or Sanenyo. History The island suffered severe damage during the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Geography The island is generally flat but has a 104.5 m high rocky upland at its southern end. Coral reefs extend about 1.5 miles from the northwestern side of the island. Demographics The island has three villages, belonging to 5 clans. Tahaila Beach is located on the east coast, where the jetty is. Katchal (Hindi: कत्चल, Nicobarese: तिहन्यु, ''Tihnyu'') is one of the Nicobar Islands, India. History Katchal Island was previously known as Tihanyu. Due to the remote location and lack of exposure with the rest of the world, outsiders economically exploited the innocent islanders for a long time. To stop their economic exploitation, the Government of India declared the Nicobar Islands an Aboriginal Tribal Reserve Area (ATRA) on 2 April 1957. 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake And Tsunami
An earthquake and a tsunami, known as the Boxing Day Tsunami and, by the scientific community, the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake, occurred at 07:58:53 local time (UTC+7) on 26 December 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. It was an undersea megathrust earthquake that registered a magnitude of 9.1–9.3 , reaching a Mercalli intensity up to IX in certain areas.
