Tennessee State Route 159
State Route 159 (SR 159) is a west to east highway in the U.S. state of Tennessee that is 12 miles (20 km) long. It begins in Carter County at State Route 67 and ends in Johnson County at the North Carolina state line. State Route 159 is little-known by the general public by this designation as it is overlain by U.S. Route 321; the "159" designation is seen on mileposts. Route description SR 159, overlain by US 321, traverses along the banks of Watauga Lake. It is a curvy two-lane mountain highway. History In 2011–12, a bridge replacement project closed a section of the highway at the Elk River; a detour route was signed using both US 321 and SR 159, along SR 67 and US 421 in Tennessee to Vilas, North Carolina, where it ended. Fish Springs is an unincorporated community in Carter County, Tennessee. Fish Springs is located on the south shore of Watauga Lake, along US Route 321 and Tennessee State Route 67 east of Hampton. History The name Fish Springs originated before Watauga Lake was created. It was given this name by early settlers because there was a large cavern system into which, via a relatively small opening, a part of the Watauga River flowed. Fish in the Watauga river migrated into the cavern system in the Fall. Each Spring the fish returned to the Watauga river via the opening. Local residents could easily catch an abundance of Fish as they exited the Spring (as the opening to the cavern system was called). Carter County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2010 census, the population was 57,424. Its county seat is Elizabethton. Johnson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,244. Its county seat is Mountain City. It is the state's northeasternmost county, sharing borders with Virginia and North Carolina. History Johnson County was created in 1836 from parts of Carter County. This followed several years of bickering over the location of Carter County's seat, with residents of what is now Johnson County arguing that travel to Elizabethton was too lengthy and difficult. When their petition to move the seat to a more central location was rejected, they petitioned the state legislature for the creation of a new county. State Route 67 (SR 67) is a state-maintained highway in northeastern Tennessee, including a four-lane divided highway segments in both Washington County and Carter County, and part of a significant two-lane segment passing over the Butler Bridge some above the TVA Watauga Reservoir (also referred locally to as Watauga Lake) near Butler in Johnson County, Tennessee. Route description Washington County SR 67 begins as Cherokee Road as a 2-lane secondary highway in Washington County in Lamar at an intersection with SR 81. The highway goes to pass through the community before leaving Lamar and continuing east through rural areas before entering Johnson City.
