Fish Springs, Tennessee
Fish Springs is an unincorporated community in Carter County, Tennessee. Fish Springs is located on the south shore of Watauga Lake, along US Route 321 and Tennessee State Route 67 east of Hampton. History The name Fish Springs originated before Watauga Lake was created. It was given this name by early settlers because there was a large cavern system into which, via a relatively small opening, a part of the Watauga River flowed. Fish in the Watauga river migrated into the cavern system in the Fall. Each Spring the fish returned to the Watauga river via the opening. Local residents could easily catch an abundance of Fish as they exited the Spring (as the opening to the cavern system was called). Watauga Lake
Watauga Lake, located east of Elizabethton, Tennessee, is the local name of the Watauga Reservoir created by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) with the 1948 completion of the TVA Watauga Dam. The Cherokee National Forest surrounds both the Tennessee Valley Authority Watauga Reservoir and Wilbur Reservoir in an area of northeast Tennessee that TVA describes as being located "...in some of the most beautiful country in the Tennessee River watershed." State Route 67 (SR 67) is a state-maintained highway in northeastern Tennessee, including a four-lane divided highway segments in both Washington County and Carter County, and part of a significant two-lane segment passing over the Butler Bridge some above the TVA Watauga Reservoir (also referred locally to as Watauga Lake) near Butler in Johnson County, Tennessee. Route description Washington County SR 67 begins as Cherokee Road as a 2-lane secondary highway in Washington County in Lamar at an intersection with SR 81. The highway goes to pass through the community before leaving Lamar and continuing east through rural areas before entering Johnson City. Hampton is an unincorporated community and Census-designated place in Carter County, Tennessee, United States. Located a few miles southeast of Elizabethton and northwest of Roan Mountain, Hampton is surrounded on all sides by the Unaka Mountains. It is part of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City– Kingsport–Bristol, TN- VA Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region. The population of the CDP in 2020 was 2,030. History Hampton was established in the late 1860s by Elijah Simerly, a state legislator and president of the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad.
