Tamil Case (Denmark)
The Tamil Case (Danish: Tamilsagen) was a case about family reunification in Denmark of Tamil refugees from the Sri Lankan Civil War. The affair led to the resignation of the government led by Poul Schlüter in 1993. The scandal was first uncovered in a series of articles written by Nils Ufer in ''Weekendavisen''. Ufer later dramatized it in the play ''Mens vi venter på retfærdigheden''. (While We're Wating for Justice). He received the Cavling Prize for his work on it posthumously in 1992. Background The case began in 1987, when the government examined the possibilities of decreasing the number of Tamil family reunifications. Following this, the Minister of Justice Erik Ninn-Hansen decided to stall the advance of family reunification of Tamil refugees. Danish law clearly granted the Tamil refugees the right to family reunification, thus rendering the justice minister's order illegal. Family Reunification
Family reunification is a recognized reason for immigration in many countries because of the presence of one or more family members in a certain country, therefore, enables the rest of the divided family or only specific members of the family to emigrate to that country as well. Family reunification laws try to balance the right of a family to live together with the country's right to control immigration. However, what the balance looks like and which members of the family can be reunited differ largely by country. A subcategory of family reunification is marriage migration in which one spouse immigrates to the country of the other spouse. Tøger Seidenfaden (28 April 1957 – 27 January 2011) was a Danish journalist and political scientist, and, from 1993 until his death, editor-in-chief of the broadsheet newspaper ''Politiken''. His father, Erik Seidenfaden, was also a journalist and was editor-in-chief of the newspaper Dagbladet Information. Suspended Sentence
A suspended sentence is a sentence on conviction for a criminal offence, the serving of which the court orders to be deferred in order to allow the defendant to perform a period of probation. DR (), officially the Danish Broadcasting Corporation in English, is a Danish public-service radio and television broadcasting company. Founded in 1925 as a public-service organization, it is Denmark's oldest and largest electronic media enterprise. DR is a founding member of the European Broadcasting Union. Café Teatret
Café Teatret is a theater in Copenhagen, Denmark that was established in 1972. It is located in Skindergade. The company stages new Danish plays as well as Danish premieres of foreign plays. One season usually sees between four and eight productions. Apart from the theater itself there's Café Teatret Kafcafeen which presents its own independent program with one-night events, including debate meetings. In 2011, Christian Lollike joined as Artistic Director with the ambition to create contemporary performing arts and a theatre with an international outreach. Since then, the theatre has undergone a major artistic change and has become significantly noticed both home and abroad. Nils Ufer
Nils Ufer (17 June 1939 – 2 January 1993) was a Danish journalist and editor. He received the Cavling Prize for his coverage of the Tamil scandal for ''Weekendavisen'' in 1992, and also wrote the five-hour single-character play ''Mens vi venter på retfærdigheden'' about the affair. Early life Ufer was born in Copenhagen, the son of artist Johannes Ufer and secretary Gunhild Ufer, née Sørensen. Career Ufer began his career as a journalist at '' Fyns Tidende'' in Odense. He worked for ''Dagbladet Information'' from 1964 to 1974. In 1968, he covered the Paris student riots for the newspaper. He left ''Dagbladet Information'' to assume a position as editor of the satirical magazine '' Corsaren'' in 1984 but returned to the newspaper in 1985. In 1987, Ufer joined ''Weekendavisen''.
