Taman Tun Sardon
Taman Tun Sardon is a residential neighbourhood within the city of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. Located south of the city centre, this working-class neighbourhood, which neighbours Minden Heights to the south and consists of low-cost five storey flats, was created in the 1980s and forms part of the Gelugor suburb. In all, 22 housing blocks were constructed within the neighbourhood to cater to the needs of lower-income citizens. Etymology Taman Tun Sardon was named in honour of Sardon Jubir, a Johor-born politician who served as the Governor of Penang between 1975 and 1981. Transportation Jalan Hilir Pemancar runs through Taman Tun Sardon, making it the main thoroughfare within the neighbourhood. Residents within the neighbourhood are also served by Rapid Penang bus routes 206 and 302, which include stops along the road. Sardon Jubir
Tun Sardon bin Jubir ( ms, سعدون بن زبير, label= Jawi, script=arab, italic=unset; 19 March 1917 – 14 December 1985) was a Malaysian politician. He served as Minister of Health, Minister of Works and Communications and was the Yang di-Pertua Negeri (Governor) of Penang from 1975 to 1981. Early life Sardon was born in Rengit, Batu Pahat, Johor on 19 March 1917. His father, Haji Jubir bin Haji Mohd Amin was a plantation owner and a ''kathi'' in Singapore. Sardon was educated at Victoria Bridge School and Raffles Institution in Singapore. At Raffles, he formed a Malay literary association with friends including Aziz Ishak, Abdul Hamid Jumat, and Ahmad Ibrahim and contributed articles on the Malays and their plight to Warta Malaya, a leading Malay newspaper in Singapore. Gelugor
Gelugor is a southern suburb of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. Named after a plant species, Gelugor lies along the eastern seaboard of Penang Island, between Jelutong and Sungai Dua, and nearly south of the city centre. Gelugor had been populated as early as the late 18th century by Malay fishermen who arrived from Sumatra. The area was then cleared for agricultural plantations by David Brown, a partner of Captain Francis Light. Urbanisation of the area began in earnest in the 1960s, when residential estates were established within the area. Gelugor gradually turned into a suburb of George Town, helped by its strategic location right in the middle between George Town proper and Bayan Lepas to the south. Minden Heights is a residential neighbourhood within the city of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. Located south of the city centre, this upscale housing estate lies within the Gelugor suburb and neighbours Universiti Sains Malaysia to the south, as well as Taman Tun Sardon to the north. Etymology Minden Heights was named after the Minden Barracks, which was established in the area by the British Army in 1939. The barracks has since been subsumed as part of Universiti Sains Malaysia. History Minden Heights was first developed as a housing estate by Dr Che Lah, an ethnic Malay councillor of the Penang Island Municipal Council (now Penang Island City Council).
