Takisaburo Tobari
was a Japanese jujutsu and judo practitioner. He was one of the earliest members of Kodokan Judo Institute, Kodokan. Biography Born in 1865, Tobari graduated as a jujutsuka of the Tenjin Shin'yō-ryū school in Edo, later known as Tokyo. He trained under Kentaro Inoue, the same master as Yokoyama Sakujiro, Sakujiro Yokoyama, and like Yokoyama himself, Tobari would join Kanō Jigorō, Jigoro Kano's Kodokan Judo Institute, Kodokan school, becoming an early judoka. After reaching the 3rd dan, he was placed as a hand-to-hand teacher at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, along with other practitioners of judo and jujutsu. Challenge matches In January 1891, Tobari fought a challenge match against a fellow professor, Mataemon Tanabe from the Fusen-ryū jujutsu school, in the police station of Hisamatsu. Fusen-ryū
was a koryū, traditional school of jujutsu founded by Motsugai Takeda. It contains a complete system of martial arts, including unarmed fighting (''jujutsu''), staff (''bōjutsu''), short staff (''jojutsu''), sword (''kenjutsu''), sword drawing (''iaijutsu''), glaive (''naginatajutsu''), scythe (''nagikamajutsu''), scythe and chain (''kusarigamajutsu'') and jitte (''jittejutsu''). While young compared to other koryu jujutsu, Fusen-ryū is well known in martial arts circles due to one of its masters, Mataemon Tanabe, and its rivalry with the Kodokan school. Takenouchi-ryū
is one of the oldest jujutsu koryū in Japan. It was founded in 1532, the first year of Tenbun, on the twenty-fourth of the sixth lunar month by Takenouchi Chūnagon Daijō Nakatsukasadaiyū Hisamori, the lord of Ichinose Castle in Sakushū. Although it is famous for its jūjutsu, Takenouchi Ryū is actually a complete martial art including armed grappling (yoroi kumiuchi), staff ('' bōjutsu''), sword ('' kenjutsu''), sword drawing (''iaijutsu''), glaive (''naginatajutsu''), iron fan (''tessenjutsu''), restraining rope (''hojōjutsu''), and resuscitation techniques (''sakkatsuhō''). Gyaku Jūji-jime
, or gyakujujijime, is a chokehold in judo.Mifune, Kyuzo: ''The Canon of Judo'', Kodansha International Ltd. (Tokyo) 2004, , p.127 It is one of the twelve constriction techniques of Kodokan Judo in the Shime-waza list. Danzan Ryu includes this technique in the Shimete list under the name Namijujijime. Ura-Juji-Jime is described in the ''Canon Of Judo'' and demonstrated in The Essence of Judo by Kyuzo Mifune. The technique is called 'reverse' because the palms of the person applying the choke are facing the person who is being choked. The thumbs are on top, outside of the clothing and the fingers grab inside underneath the gi or clothing. The hands are high up each side of the neck. Scissoring the hands applies pressure to the carotid arteries reducing blood flow, rapidly resulting in loss of consciousness.
