Albert Tafel
Albert Tafel (6 November 1876 in Stuttgart – 19 April 1935 in Heidelberg) was a German geographer, doctor and explorer. Prof. Dr. med. Albert Tafel was the son of Emil Otto Tafel, architect (Oberbaurat) and Professor at the School of Architecture (Baugewerbeschule) in Stuttgart, and his wife Lina, née Reuchlin. Biography Following graduation from Dillmann's Modern School he took a journey on foot through the Balkans to Constantinople and Troy. In 1896/7 he served a year in the 26th regiment of the 'yellow dragoons' (gelbe Dragoner) – so called because of their yellow collars and cuffs – in Ludwigsburg. The years 1898–1902 were spent studying medicine in Tübingen, Berlin and Freiburg im Breisgau. Early life and career Tafel was born in New York City to Russian Jewish immigrants, and moved to New Jersey with his dressmaking parents. He was educated at the Ferrer Center and Colony, the Walden School in Manhattan, and New York University. Tafel began his career as an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin along with Wesley Peters, John "Jack" Howe and Abram Dombar, among others. Tafel was considered the "unofficial guardian of the Frank Lloyd Wright School", despite the rift that had developed between Tafel and his late mentor when Tafel, after a 9-year residency, left Taliesin to pursue his own work and family. Gustav Tafel
Gustav Tafel (October 13, 1830 – November 12, 1908) was a German-born colonel in the Union Army during the American Civil War, and the mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1897 to 1900. Biography Tafel was born in Munich, Germany (München). He was one of the Forty-Eighters, meaning he fled Germany after the Revolution of 1848. He started in Cincinnati as a printer, and later became a newspaper editor. He resided in a house at the northeastern corner of 14th and Walnut streets from 1848 to 1870. At the time, Cincinnati had a large German population and a number of German language newspapers, and Tafel quickly became a leader in that community. When war erupted and Governor William Dennison called for volunteers to join the army, Tafel enlisted with the Cincinnati "Turnverein" and served as a lieutenant in Company A, 9th Ohio Infantry, a mostly German regiment. Julius Tafel
Julius Tafel (2 June 1862 – 2 September 1918) was a Swiss chemist and electrochemist. Work He worked first with Hermann Emil Fischer on the field of organic chemistry, but changed to electrochemistry after his work with Wilhelm Ostwald. He is known for the discovery of an electrosynthetic rearrangement reaction of various alkylated ethyl acetoacetates to form hydrocarbons, now called the Tafel rearrangement, and the Tafel equation, which relates the rate of an electrochemical reaction to the overpotential. He is also credited for the discovery of the catalytic mechanism of hydrogen evolution (the Tafel mechanism). Tafel retired aged 48 due to ill health, but continued to write book reviews until his death. Life Tafel suffered from insomnia and eventually had a complete nervous breakdown. __NOTOC__ De Stenen Tafel is a restaurant in Borculo, in the Netherlands. It is a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin star in 1999 and retained that rating until 2011. French restaurant guide Gault Millau did not mention the restaurant or its sister bistro De Olliemölle. The head chef of De Stenen Tafel is Raymond Prinsen, who took over in 1994. Prinsen closed the restaurant in April 2011, due to lack of motivation. He went on with his Bib Gourmand bistro De Olliemölle and started developing other plans, like a cookery school. Prinsen did not enjoy his restaurant-free period and announced the return of the restaurant in April 2012. Although with a different concept, just open two days a week and 20 couverts, he has promised to try to get his star back.
